[Note] "At the end of thirty years after the Reformation the church of Haddington
the Chapel of St, Martin and the Church of Athelstaneford were all served
by one parson. This paucity of preachers owing to the penury of provision in
the reformed church continued till 1602 George Grier was now ordained
minister of St. Martin's Chapel and he was the last who officiated in this
ancient fane." -- Chalmer's Caledonia vol [volume] 2 page 515
[Note] "In the suburbs of Newgate are the ruins of St. Martin's Chapel which belonged to the Abbey of Haddington. It appears from the records of Haddington which are extant as far back as 1592 that the cure of the churches of Haddington St. Martins and Athelstaneford were served by one Clergyman Mr James Carmichael from 1592 to 1602 and probably for several years preceding that period. In 1602 Mr G. Grier was ordained minister
of St. Martins. He Seems to have had no successor. It is believed that this Chapel was suffered to go into decay as St Mary's (the present parish
church) was then Sufficiently large to contain both congregations." -- Stat. Acct [Statistical Account] of Hadding [Haddington] page 14 - |

[Situation] In the Centre of the parish of Haddington
A royal burgh, a town of great antiquity, And the metropolis of East Lothian is pleasantly Situated within a bend of the Tyne, And on the left bank of that river, which divides it from the suburb of Nungate. The town consists of six streets. The entrance from the west is by Court street which leads into two parallel streets, called the High Street And MarKet Street. These are intersected at right angles by the Sidegate and Longcauseway, and on the left Hardgate Street which leads to the N. E [North East] port And the London Road. The other which bears the significant name of Church Street, leads to the public schools, Nungate, and the parish Church. The Streets are well

well Kept, and have in general the advantages of a side-pavement , And are lighted with gas. The houses are Chiefly from three to four stories in height, And have a modern and regular appearance, many of the shops in the principal streets being equal to those in the metropolis. The suburb of Nungate is Connected
with Haddington by a very Ancient bridge, purporting by its date, to have been erected in the 12th Century. The approaches to the town from the west and east are beautified by elegant villas, luxuriant gardens, And extensive nurseries. Situated in a rich agricultural district Haddington has been recKoned, among the greatest markets in Scotland for all Kinds of grain. In early times tanning of leather Seems to have been a trade of great importance in the burgh, and it is still carried on to a considerable extent. (The public buildings, Antiquities, Manufactories, etc are described under their respective heads, in the annexed orthography Sheets) The name "Haddington" though apparently of Saxon origin, is of Doubtful etymology. Haddington united with Dunbar, Lauder, North Berwick and Jedburgh in returning a member to parliament. |

It appears to have been a place of magnificence but is now almost
in ruins. It is beautifully situated at the foot of the Garleton

Commands a delightful prospect of a large
proportion of the lower lands of East Lothian." -- Old Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] vol. [volume] 10 page 175
An old baronial mansion of large of large extent stands in this parish formerly
the residence of the Earls Winton. Part of it is still inhabitted, but the greater
part is in ruins. It had been built in the form of a square an excellent garden
