010 | A Circular monument about 14 ft [feet] in diameter and about 99 feet high Situated on the Summit Of Byrie hill On the farm of Byres. It is a Substantial Stone building with an inside winding Stone Stairs leading to a square turret on its Summit. guarded by a low parapet wall. On a Stone in the West Side of it is the following inscription "This monument was erected to the memory of the great and good. John fourth Earl of Hopetoun, by his affectionate tenantry in East Lothian A.D. 1824. |
