009 | A Tract of ground of very undefined demensions situated on the farms of Bankton, Cockenzie House, Thorntree Mains West Mains Tranent Mains, & Portobello. It is a flat tract of arable ground now traversed by the North British Railway, & other improvements, Since its being the site of a Battle between the Highlanders and Other Rebels under Prince Charles, and a division of the British Army under General Sir John Cope. The battle was fought On the Morning of the 21st September 1745, and ended in the defeat of Sir John Cope who with a few of the Dragoons that comprised his division fled by Bankton House to Birsleybrae and on by Soutrahill to Coldstream the Same night leaving his Military Chest Containing £4000 and other stores in the hands of the victorious Rebels. |
