A large field or park which was lately divided into three enclosures by temporary or slightly constructed fences Tradition asserts that in this park Prince Charles rested the night previous to the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745. In Fullartons Gazetteer, it is said, "A few piquets were placed around the bivouack and the Highlanders having wrapped themselves up in their plaids lay upon the ground to repose for the night. Charles taking a sheaf of pease for his pillow stretched himself upon the stubble surrounded by his principal officers."
