3rd Sepr 1650 |
G Rennie, Oxwell Mains, Dunbar

007 |
A considerable tract of arable Land S.E. [South East] of Broxmouth, and in a Line Between Brands mile and Catcraig; generally considered to be the Site of a Battle fought between the Parliamentary Forces Under Cromwell, and the Scotch army commanded by General Leslie. No definite Spot can be ascertained, but the report of Cromwell to parliament says that "the Enemy were chased 8 miles"; where this portion of ground was brought under the plough, human Skeletons were turned up here and at intervals throughout the district; and at a Spot Marked A near vaults, about a dozen graves were recently discovered; theywere all composed of Rough Stones, and paved at the bottom but no bones or human remains were recognised. About 15 Chains South of A on digging the foundations for a summer House, on a Small Hill; Two Graves were opened, composed of Rough Stones of a different kind from those at A, the graves were not paved but contained human bones in tolerable preservation. I cannot ascertain that the above remains are relics of the Slain of the Same action. |

SITE OF BATTLE (SUPPOSED) |
Site of Battle (Supposed) |
Hist [History]: of Dunbar (Miller's)
The Revd [Reverend] J. Jaffray Manse, Dunbar
Mr George Purves Little Pinkerton |
007 |
The portion of the valley lying between Broomhouse Mill and Oswaldean is supposed to be the place where the Scots Army under the Earls of Buchan, Lennox and Mar, were met and defeated by the English under Earl Warrene, in 1296.
The castle of Dunbar was then being besieged by the English, And the party of the Scots defeated were on their way to reinforce that garison.
The action was short and decisive, the Scots being routed and pursued as far a Selkirk Forest. The Revd [Reverend] John Jaffray was refered to to point out the site of this battle, and it is his opinion, that the valley above mentioned is the place. James Miller, in his Hist. [History] of Dunbar, supposes it to be the valley near Oswaldean, the Farmers of the neighbourhood are of the same opinion. |

The site of a battle fought between the english and Scots on 3rd Sept [September] 1650. On the night previous to the battle General Leslie was encamped on Doon Hill, with the Scots army, & on the same night the english army under Cromwell drew up by the side of the Rivulet near Brands Mill. On the morning of 3rd the Scots decended from Doon Hill and were met by the english and defeated with great slaughter a short distance south from Brands Mill. The Revd [Reverend] John Jaffray Ph [Parish] Minister says this Battle should be called the Battle of Doonhill but he also states that it is often called the Battle of Dunbar. |
