[North West by West] from East Barns A commodious and modern built mansion of 3 stories high and in good repair, the policy that Surrounds the mansion comprises about 360 acres of land with a farm Steading. the whole is enclosed with a Stone and lime built wall 10ft [feet] in height. It is traditionally Said that Cromwell slept at this house on the night of the 2nd September 1650 the eve of the battle of Dunbar. a short distance to the W [West] of the house is a small Knoll called Cromwell's Mount. also a little to the S.E. [South East] is the grave of Sir William Douglas who was Slain in the battle. This mansion is the residence of the Duchess Dowager of Roxburgh. |
