The royal burgh and seaport of Dunbar was evidently at first only a fishing village which gradually sprung up under the protection of the Castle and the several powerful families to which it belonged. and between it and the shore run two smaller streets; while the harbour projects a little into the bay on the south east, the far-famed Castle stands upon a rock which rises directly north of Dunbar House. --- The most ancient part of the town is in the neighbourhood of the Castle and harbour and appears to have extended southward --- The houses are principally modern but still a few remain of the Flemish style with their dove-tailed gables to the front. --- The town was formerly surrounded by a strong wall with Gates or Ports at the principal entrances but not a vestige of such now remains.* --- Dunbar is famed for its herring fishery which commences annually about the beginning of August and continues nearly two months; there is also a considerable trade in wood & grain with the Baltic besides Ship-building & Coast trade. a weekly corn market is held on Tuesday and Fairs chiefly for hiring Servants after the terms of Whitsunday & Martinmas. --- The affairs of the Burgh are transacted by a Provost, three Bailies, a Chamberlain, (fifteen)
* The wall was not for the purpose of defence, but merely for the protection of the customs collected at the ports.

This interesting ruin stands at the northern extremity and presents a peculiarly bold appearance, in the feudal lines it was deemed impregnable, and withstood many sieges, the time of its erection cannot be ascertained but it had been ascribed to the Picts a race of the ancient Caledonians at an early period when they established one of their strongholds in the Lothians.
It is built of red sand stone similar to that still found in the neighbouring quarries. (turn over)

Castle Continued
[Note] -- The venerable ruins of the Castle of Dunbar are justly esteemed
a remarkable piece of antiquity. There is no history nor tradition
to fix the date of this building or to point out the person by whom
it was erected. Camden narrates that Gospatrick Earl of Northumberland
retiring into Scotland from the Norman Conquest was honoured by
Malcolm Canmore with the Castle of Dunbar and Earldom of March
and that his posterity afterwards took the surname of Dunbar. King
Edward II. of England escaped to this Castle (then in the hands of
the English) after the Battle of Bannockburn and thence fled to
Berwick in a fisherman's boat. It has been large and built on
several rocks, within the sea mark. It was exceeding strong
and before the use of artillery quite impregnable. In some old
Records it is called Earl Patrick's strong house. It was always
esteemed a place of importance and the Key to Scotland on the S.E. [South East] borders
Dunbar was for many years during the cruel wars between the two
nations the scene of much action and bloodshed. The town was

frequently ravaged and burnt. The Castle was often besieged

under the government of a lady called Black Agnes of Dunbar, the wife
of PatricK Earl of March and the Sister of Randolph Earl
of Murray. This manly heroine in the absence of her husband by her
vigilance and military courage forced Lord Montague to raise
the siege & leave the Country, etc, etc. -- Sinclairs Stat. Acct. vol [Statistical Account volume] 5. page 484
"The Castle of Dunbar had often furnished a larger Theatre for warliKe exploits in earlier times
The ruins of this fortalice which is seated on a rocK above the sea is the Dun-bar or strenght
upon the summit of the ancient people. As the land in this vicinity was given by Malcolm Canmore
to Cospatrick, the expatriated Earl of Northumberland we may easily suppose that he here
strenghtened a castle which was completed by his warlike and opulent successors the Earls of Dunbar
and March. The sieges which it successively sustained by the most warliKe princes are satisfactory
proofs of its strenght from its natural position and artificial worKs. The foul deeds and flight of
James Earl of Bothwell induced the parliament of December 1567 to direct its demolition. The neigh-
-bouring town derived its existence and its name from the castelated cliff". -- Chalmers Caledonia vol [volume] 2 page [407] |

[Situation] About 1 5/8 miles south of Dunbar
The portion of the valley lying between Broomhouse Mill and Osnalddean is supposed to be the place where the Scottish Army under the Earls of Buchan, Lennox and Mar, were met and defeated by the English under Earl Warrens in 1296. The Castle of Dunbar was then being besieged by the English and the Scots were marching to relieve that garrison. The action was short and decisive, the Scots being completely routed and pursued as far as SelKirk Forest. |

Edward, on receiving intelligence of this event, immediately
dispatched the Earl of Warrens with a great body of his best traps
to the Castle; (Dunbar) and the garrison being soon reduced
to straits, obtained a cessation from hostilities for three days,
in order to their sending a messenger to their King to inform
him of their Situation, and to receive his orders about terms
of Capitulation. But the place and persons within it were of
so much consequence that Baliol resolved to hazard a battle
for its relief. The Scottish Army is said to have consisted of
40,000 foot and 1500 horse ***. As soon as they appeared
descending in martial array over the hill against Dunbar, which
was on the third day After the message was sent to Baliol,
Warrens, notwithstanding his inferior numbers, having left the
servants of the great men of his Army, arrived with some soldiers
to blocKade the place, advanced with the rest of his forces to
meet the Scots. The English, in descending towards a valley

And marching over it, being obliged to break their ranks, their enemies imagined they were
flying and expressed their excitation by a hideous noise of blowing their horns and howling.
But when the English emerged from the hollow, and advanced to meet them in good order, all
this noise was turned into silence, and in the sharp conflict that followed, the Scots were soon
broken. The English pursued their scattered foes the space of seven or eight leagues, almost
to the forest of SelKirK, and slew in the pursuit about 10,000.
Ridpath's Border Hist: [History] Page 198
From the remains which have all different periods been discovered in this locality, it is conjectured
that the forces must have been widely scattered, quantities of human bones having been
dug up in the various fields in the neighbourhood, all agree however, in supposing this to be the place
where the battle commenced. The Revd [Reverend] J. Jaffray of Dunbar, and Mr George Purves of Little PinKerton,
pointed out the site.
Captain James, R.E. [Royal Engineers] has also examined this ground
and the name is written on plan according to the best of his judgement and according
to the information he received in the locality. |

County Map |

This Town was evidently at first a fishing Village, which gradually sprung up under the protection of the Castle and rose into influence under the several powerful families to which it belonged. It consists chiefly of one principal Street, High St, from which the others Branch off to the shore or Harbour, The Houses are principally Modern but Still a few remain of that Flemish description which stood with their dove-tailed gables to the front. The most ancient portion of the Town lies towards the Harbour under cover of the Castle from which it appears to have gradually extended southward, it was formerly surrounded with a strong wall with Ports or Gates at the principal entrances, but not a vestige of such at present remains. The affairs of the Burgh are transacted by the Magistrates and Town Council of a Provost, Three Bailies; a Treasurer, Town Clerk, Chamberlain and fifteen members of Council. The Magistrates hold a weekly Court in the Town Hall on Saturdays. Its Public buildings, Civil and Ecclesiastical remains Churches, Streets &c &c are described under their several heads in the accompanying orthography Sheets. |

Revd [Reverend] Thomas Burnet, Viewfield
Mason's Chart of Dunbar Harbour |
006 |
Dunbar Castle stands at the north end of the Town, its possition is peculiarly strong bold and Wild and deemed impregnable in Older times, which is quite evident from the numerous sieges it sustained. The time of its erection cannot be precisely ascertained but was evidently built by the Picts at an early Period of the Christian era, when these adventurers emigrated from Germany and fixed one of their principal seats in the Lothians. It is built of a red sandstone similar to that found in the different Quarries in the Neighbourhood. In the North West quarter of the ruins is an apartment about 12 feet square and nearly inaccessible which tradition denominates the room Occupied by Queen Mary during the time of her stay at Dunbar after her Celebrated Capture at Cramond Brig by Bothwell. On the meeting of Parliment in December 1567, in the reign of King James the 6th of Scotland An Act was passed and subsequently carried into effect for its total demolition. Thus fell the Castle of Dunbar after it sustained the Brunt of War and ravages of the storm for upwards of 7 Centuries of well authenticated history. |

The rock on which the Battery is built, is situated between the Victoria and old Harbours consists of Basaltie Columns or a Stratum of stone resembling in a Minor degree the Giants Causeway in Ireland or St Fingal's Cave in the Island of Staffa. Mr Pennant describes it as consisting of a Red grit stone either Triangular or Hexangular their diameter from 1 to 2 feet; their length at low water from 20 to 30 feet dipping or declining a little to the South; they are jointed but not plainly as those which form the Giants Causeway, the surface of several that had been broKen off appears as a pavement of numbers of Convex ends, probally answering to the Concave bottoms of other joints incumbered on them. The space between the Columns are filled with the septa of Red & White sparry Matter; the Veins of the same pervading the Columns Transversely" |
