006 | A small village about 1 mile West of Dunbar Chiefly consisting of dwelling houses, besides several handsome Villas recently erected in its neighbourhood. This Village was originally the port of Dunbar and has still the appearance of a thriving village. The Artillery barracks which were situated in this village, was purchased from government - and converted into a Cotton Factory in 1815, and gave employment to about 250 looms and supported a population of upwards of 500, people, chiefly Irish. This establishment fell into decay, on the disastrous failure of the East Lothian Bank. Belhaven is Situated within the Royatly of Dunbar, and gives title to a Scottish baron |
