Very little now remiams of this Castle, it appears to have been once surrounded by a fortifiied ditch and was the Baronial seat of the Hepburns the Representative of whom lives at Smeaton - on the west side of it stands a very ancient Yew tree, from which the Hepburn family take there Arms - "A yew tree with a horse tied to it, with the Motto - Keep Tryst" | |

Not a Vestage of this Chapel is a t present in existence, but my informant states he recollects to have seen the gable end of it standing, it appears to have been a private Chapel to the Castle as it was within the fortifications, The Grave Yard around it has not been used for many generations past,large numbers of rude stone Coffins have been dug out of by the late farmer, Peter Rennie of Waughton - who Vandal like dug up this burial place and Conveyed its rich soil to manure he adjoining fields, the plough often turns up skulls, Bones, &c where he scattered them |
