[South East] by S. [South] from Gosford House. The ruins of an old castle on the farm of Redhouse. Its walls are of considerable thickness and stands about 6 storeys in height but roofless. The date of its erection is not known in the locality. On a stone above the door is the following inscription. R M D. MVIDOMINVS . TRVSTRARD "Redhouse Castle stands on the margin of a small stream which separates the parish from Glasdmuir, and, though now utterly in ruins, seems to have been a mansion of considerable extent. The date of its erection is not exactly known, but it was probably built towards the close of the 16th century, or perhaps at a still earlier period. The Situation is imposing and it has attached to it an extensive garden with an excellent exposure and well stocKed with fruit trees still productive. The lands of Redhouse were held in the 15th century by the Laings, one of which family was Treasurer of Scotland in 1465 Bishop of Glasgow in 1473 and High Chancellor in 1483. From this family the estate came by marriage into the hands of Sir A. Hamilton brother of the first Earl of Haddington." See Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Haddington.

It is the property and residence of the Earl of Wemyss. Within the last few years a large and handsome addition at front was built to the Mansion house and a few chains in front of it an entire new mansion house was built at an expense of one hundred thousand pounds. It is a large and handsomely constructed edifice but when nearly completed on account of some radical fault its completion was abandoned and a part of its walls was taken down to supply material for the improvements made to the old or present mansion. on a stone over the Door of the new building is the date 1800.

OS1/15/28/43 Redhouse Castle Redhouse Castle Thomas Christison, Gosford; Andrew Anderson, Spittal 004 An old castle on the farm of Redhouse, it is a large building six storys high and completely roofless, the walls which are built of red sandstone are of considerable thickness and indented with embrasures. Its interior is one mass of broken walls and stairs and a portion of the East Side seems to have been removed. The date of its erection is unknown. The last proprietor of it named Hamilton lost it and his life for engageing in the Rebellion of 1745. On a stone over the door is the following inscription R M D MNIDOMINVS TRVSTRARD. It is at present the property of the Earl of Wemyss.
