004 A small Village in the N. [North] West part of the Parish of Dirleton, attached to which are extensive Links. Its name is said to have been derived from the British word go-lyn which signifies a little Lake or Pool. In the centre of the village stand the Ruins of an Ancient Church, surrounded by a Graveyard, which was dedicated to St Andrew and well Endowed.
This Village was, at one time, the capital of the parish, to which it gave its name; but in 1612 the Seat of Worship was removed by act of Parliament to Dirleton, and at the same time changing the name of the Parish to its present appellation.
In ancient documents & records, the village name is variously written: Goolan, Gullan, Gulane and Gullane - the latter mode i.e. Gullane is the recognised modern mode.
Mrs Ferguson of Archerfield is the principal owner: tho [though] feued to several others
