003 [Situation] About 1 1/4 Mile N W by N [North-West by North] from New Mains
A spring well situated on the boundary between the parishes of Whitekirk and North Berwick, previous to the proprietors on each side had agreed to change the boundary, After Which the well was Covered. and pipes laid from it, to Convey Water to the farm houses of Castletown, and Auldhame and also to a newly formed Well, close to the eastside of the boundary in the Parish of Whitekirk The old well is carefully covered over. The occupier of the farm Shewed the spot where it exists.

[Quote] "About half a mile South west from Tantallan Castle there
"is a plentiful Spring of water of peculiar excellence Substantially
"and Tastefully enclosed Called Baldred's well which has immemorially
"has supplied the inhabitants of Castleton and even of Auldhame.
" It is held in high modern estimation for its qualifications to
"make Tea" Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] 1839

[Note] Note St Baldred's Well (covered) to be written on plan and
as the new well is so near the old one. Well. only to
be written to the latter. And as St Baldred is known to
have lived in this district, the connection of this well
with St Baldred is evidint Therefore the former to
be written as an antiquity.
