002 | A Village considered to be one of the neatest in the County. It contains an Estab. [Established] Church & Manse, a Par. [Parish] School, a Free church, an Old Castle, a Post office, one Inn and Several neatly constructed cottages etc. The houses are for the most part built in a plain Gothic style, with tastefully arranged Gardens etc attached; and nearly surround a Triangular Green on the south side of which stands the Ruin of Dirleton Castle embosomed among Evergreens interspersed with Trees. Mrs Ferguson is the principal proprietor to whose praiseworthy exertions the Village owes the distinction of so much rural neatness. |
