002 [Situation] About 3/4 Mile N,E, by E, [North East by East] from Williamston
A royal burgh and seaport town 22 miles N.E. [North East] of Edinburgh and 9 north-north east of Dunbar It mainly consists of two streets nearly at right angles with each other but the parliamentary boundary extends from the Yellow Craig on the east to Point Garry on the west. It is a town of considerable importance and was created a royal burgh by Robert III. Its privileges were confirmed by a charter of James VI, dated 18th September 1568 Its exports are grain and potatoes; its imports coal, and ground bones for manure. The harbour is formed by a tolerably good pier with water sufficient for vessels of small tonnage The municipal government is vested in 12 councillors who elect 2 bailies and a treasurer. It unites with the burghs of Haddington, Dunbar, Lauder, and Jedburgh, in returning a member to parliament.
