[Situation] About 2 Miles N.N.E. [North North East] from Collegehead
A bleak island in the Frith of Forth a little north of Longskelly Rocks on the coast of Dirleton Parish. Its appearance is highly picturesque the northern portion is of considerable elevation, very rocky and precipitous. It is seperated from the southern part by a chasm covered by high water, on the eastern end of this part of the Island is a tabular piece of pasture land, called Castle Tarbet, on a rocky eminence and rises in a castellated form, hence the name. On the 8th May 1509, a royal charter was granted by James IV to Henry Congleton |

"At Elbottle a name now given to a plantation north of Archerfield
And which is the abbreviation of the Saxon word Eldbotel signifying the
old dwelling,) there was a convent of Cistertian Nuns, a cell of the great
establishment of those nuns, founded by David I at Berwick-upon-

at Golyn, near the Church, probably, however, identified with
Elbottle". -- Stat: Acct: [Statistical Account] of Scotland (Hadd:) [Haddington] Page 211 |

The Statl. acct [Statistical Account] states that "there was a Convent of Cistertian Nuns - a cell of the establishment formed by David 1st at Berwick upon Tweed - at Elbottle" and there is a Tradition in this neighbourhood that there was formerly a castle in Elbottle wood which wood consists of Mixed Forest and Fir Trees but Chiefly, Firs. Mrs. Ferguson is the proprietor.
I have not been able to meet with any person that could point out the site of these edifices. they all point to Ellbottle or Ellbattle Wood as the probable site.
In 1646 Sir John Maxwell of Innerwick - having purchased Dirleton previously - was created Earl of Dirleton and Lord Elbottle: both Titles being taken from this Parish" Stat. Acct [Statistical Account] |
