001 [Situation] About 2 1/8 of a Mile N.N.E. [North North East] from Collegehead
In the reign of William I A Chapel was founded here viz on Fidra Island. and was dedicated to St. Nicholas. the remains both of it and the Graveyard attached are still Visible. Part of the north wall still remains it is about 4 feet high all the other walls are taken away.

"As early as the reign of William there was a chapel which was dedicated to St. Nicolas on Fidrey
isle, near the shore of Elbotle; and the ruins whereof still remain" -- Chalmers Caledonia vol [volume] 2 page 519

"In the 12th Century the Anglo-Norman family of De Vallibus or De Vaux, obtained a grant of the
manors of Golyn and Dirleton with part of Fenton, During the reign of William the Lion. William de Vaux
bestowed the church of Golyn rated at 80 marks in the taxatio on the monks of Dryburgh. In the same reign
there was a chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas on Fiddrie isle in this parish" -- Fullarton's Gazetteer of Scotland.

"As early as the reign of William I there was a chapel dedicated to St. Nicholas on the Island
of Fidrey the ruins of which still remain" -- Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] of Haddingtonshire

"There are two small islands belonging to the parish. The one called Fidrie is a very beautiful island on which
there are the ruins of a building probably designed either for a chapel or a lazaret for the sick."
