001 A small Hill feature said to be the site of some old dwelling or dwellings. The name is from the Saxon word Eldbotel or botle the old dwelling or old Residence; it is situated at the S. [South] East of a Wood to which it gives name.

001 The Statl. acct [Statistical Account] states that "there was a Convent of Cistertian Nuns - a cell of the establishment formed by David 1st at Berwick upon Tweed - at Elbottle" and there is a Tradition in this neighbourhood that there was formerly a castle in Elbottle wood which wood consists of Mixed Forest and Fir Trees but Chiefly, Firs. Mrs. Ferguson is the proprietor.
I have not been able to meet with any person that could point out the site of these edifices. they all point to Ellbottle or Ellbattle Wood as the probable site.
In 1646 Sir John Maxwell of Innerwick - having purchased Dirleton previously - was created Earl of Dirleton and Lord Elbottle: both Titles being taken from this Parish" Stat. Acct [Statistical Account]
