Revd Dr [Reverend Doctor] Cook Miss Randall Elm House Mr Nelson Mr Mowat Excise officer |
010 | [situation] North side of Church Street on Mrgin of River Tyne This was the site of an ancient monastery of the Franciscans or Grey Friars who were also called Minorite or Cordeliere Friars. The exact time of its foundation is not Known but it appears to be of Considerable antiquity and to have been richly endowed. It appears to have been a costly building from its church which still remains partly in ruins and part of it used as the parish church and appears to have been detached a short distance from the monastery. The site of it is pointed out as that on which Elm House stands in this particular all the written accounts agree and also the parish minister Revd [Reverend] J. Cook D.D. [Doctor of Divinity] See his letter annexed. See also the Account of St Mary's Church in Name BooK for Sheet No. 2. |
