010 | [situation] South side of Church Street, a little east of St Ann's Place. Two buildings erected at the expense of the town and occupied as the burgh schools. The average attendance about 190, and about 130 of those are designated infants and attend the Infant classes in two separate apartments. The remainder are in the higher classes taught by two masters in the ordinary branches of an English education including classics. Salary £45 paid by the Burgh Magistrates, beside School fees. The infant school is taught by 2 female teachers. One school occupies the lower storey of the building the other occupies the upper storey. |

Note - The Town Library is Kept in an apartment of the Burgh School. This library was established here in 1717 by the Rev. [Reverend] John Gray a native of Haddington and minister of Aberlady, but it has been considerably augmented from time to time. This library is exclusively for the use of those residents within the burgh.
