010 A populous suburb of Haddington divided from that town by the River Tyne. the houses are mostly one and two storeys and in general good repair occupied by mechanics and laborers, there is only one small Public house with no name. 5 Retail Grocers Shops two Bakers one Distillery now disused one Brewery and a Private School, the name originated from a number of nunneries having formerly been here, there is two old houses still standing which are supposed to have been nunneries but the oldest inhabitant about here cannot vouch for the fact, the old church of St Martins now in ruins stands at the east end of the Nungate there is no name for the different streets all goes under the one name, it is governed by a baron bailie elected by the Freeholders
