"The ruins of a Roman Catholic Chapel still remain in part of Keith House, with a cemetery attached to it. Mr. John Keynart Minister of Duffey was vicar of Keith in the year 1595. when he sold the living which afforded twelve chalders of victuals and three husbands of land for a mere trifle to the Earl marshall. all succeeding proprietors have kept possession of the lands." Parish of Humbie
64 - Keith Church (Ruins of)[and the Situation as] About 7/8 Mile S.S.W [South-South-West] from Old Duncrahill
[notes]
As this was a parish
Church "Keith Church" (&
not Chapel) is the proper designation.
The parish of Humbie comprehends the ancient districts of Keith-
-Hundeby and Keith-Marshal. At the epoch of record Keith, appears
to have been the ancient name of the whole district. From David I. Hervei
obtained a grant of the N.W. [North-West] half of this district which was called from
him Keith Hervey & afterwards called Keith Marshall. From the
Same King Simon Frazer acquired a grant of the S E. [South-East] half of the
same district which was denominated from him Keith-Simon and was
afterward called Keith-Hundeby. As the Church stood within the district of
Keith Simon Hervei erected a chapel within his own district or manor
for the use of his tenants. After a lapse of time this district was made
a distinct parish with its chapel for the separate church and was thenceforth
independent and of the church of Keith-Simon. - See Chalmers account of Humbie |

[Situation] About 15 Chains South from Milton
A small eminence a little South of Milton where a number of rude stone coffins containing human bones were exhumed a few years ago. The graves were very numerous and of various dimmensions and seem to have been made at a very remote period. On account of the number of small graves, evidently those of children, it cannot be the place of sepulture of warriors slain in battle but seems to have been a regular burying place. Dilligent search was made for coins &c. but nothing was found to throw any light upon this discovery. |

Mr. Henderson Forman Templehall. |
014 |
An extensive burying place, on a small eminence south of Milton, has been discovered a few years back. The Coffins were made of rude Stone flags. the graves were of various demensions and from 2 1/2 to 6 feet in length. Some of the skeletons were almost entire. but altho [although] diligent search was made for Coins &c. nothing was found, that would lead to throw any further light. on it It is Supposed to have been a place of interment used by the inhabitants. at some remote period. on account of the number of Small graves, evidently where Children were interred, which have been discovered. and which could not have fallen in battle - The name "Burial Knowe" has been given to this place of late years. |
