A parish in the Western division of Haddingtonshire. bounded on the West by Gladsmuir, on the East by Salton, on the South by Ormiston and on the West by Ormiston and Tranent. It is rather more than 4 miles from West to East and 3 miles from North to South. And in area it measures about 3.800 scottish acres. In general the parish, is all throughout well enclosed and cultivated, diversified with fields, meadows & Woods. Coal and Lime abound, also several excellent quarrying of freestone. There are a few small villages, and Gentlemens Mansions Some of the latter are surrounded with large & well wood demesns. Population in 1831. 1168. Pencaitland is in the Presbytery of Haddington, and Synot of Lothian and Tweeddalle. Patron. Hamilton of Pencaitland. Stipend £291 0s 2d Glebe £14.
