This parish was anciently called St. Bothons or St. Bathans. after the Reformation it was changed to Yester. but now popularly called Gifford. It is bounded on the north by the parish of Haddington. On the N.E. [North-East] the East and the S. East [South-East] by Garvald. on the South by Berwickshire & Humbie. and on the W. [West] by Humbie and Bolton. Its greatest length is 6 miles. breadth 5 miles and its superficial extent is nearly 14 square miles. It has a few villages. the principal of which is Gifford and contains the parish Church &c, It is in the Presbytery of Haddington and Synod of Lothian & Tweeddale. Patron the Marquis of Tweeddale.
