012 | [Situation] In the N.E. [North East] portion of the parish. A small irregular village the houses of which are one and two stories high and generally in good repair & occupied by mechanics farm servants etc. It contains the parish church & school, a Free Church, a private school, a publick house, a post office and some grocers shops etc. It is said that when Cromwell invaded Scotland that he passed through this village and remained a short time in a house which still bears his name. At the west end of it at one time stood a castle which belonged to the Hepburn family. Broadwood, the celebrated pianoforte maker was born at this village. |
