I am of opinion Mr. James Darling Sir In answer to your inquiry a portion of the old Tower or Vault of Penshiel is still standing, arched with stone. It is surrounded by the foundations of several buildings, but a few hundred yards to the west a large stone stands erect called the Chapel Stone A short distance from that Stone there is the foundation of a building fifty feet long twenty feet broad standing from east to west, which is presumed to be the foundation of the Chapel a little to the north is a glen in which is the

It was probably the site of a Cell of one of the Friars as the stream which passes through it is Kell Burn which is evidently a Corruption of Kill Burn or Cell Burn: giving the C either the Gaelic or [frak] sound.

OS1/15/13/40 PENSHIEL (IN RUINS) Penshiel (in ruins) Pauchishiel James Darling Priestlaw Patrich Johnston Millknowe Robert Murdoch Kingside Estate map dated 1741 020 The ruins of an ancient baronial residence, Situated on the farm of Priestlaw. the arched roof of the ground flast is still standing and is of plain mason work. This building was long occupied as a farm house previous to about 1770. Since that time it has not been occupied. There is still some remains of offices &c but which are nearly all removed for building. A chapel stood near this house the site of which cannot now be pointed out. A short distance west from this ruin is a shepherds dwelling house and small garden. The spelling Paunchshiell is not now used.
