In the various accounts
of the Parish of Whittingham
there is notice of
a chapel having been
at Some former time
Situated on the lands of
Penshiel. In Some
later accounts it is Said
to have Stood in a glen
Called Chapel Haugh
near Penshiel Tower.
Will you please inform
me whether you can point
out the identical spot
or probable place where
the Chapel of Penshiel Stood.

In answer to your inquiry
a portion of the old Tower
or Vault of Penshiel is still
standing, arched with stone.
It is surrounded by the
foundations of several
buildings, but a few hundred
yards to the west a large stone
stands erect called the Chapel Stone
A short distance from that
Stone there is the foundation
of a building fifty feet
long twenty feet broad standing
from east to west, which
is presumed to be the
foundation of the Chapel
a little to the north
is a glen in which is the
