016 |
An elegant mansion built on the summit of a projecting rocky headland and commanding an extensive view of LochLong and the opposite shore. It occupies the site of an ancient Castle or Fort the remains of which were removed when this was erected.
"There are no ruins or monuments to throw any light on the more remote history of this parish with the exception of the debris of an old Danish or Norwegian Fort at Knockderry, on the Loch Long shore. This must have been coeval at least with the Battle of Largs (2nd. October, 1263.) and is admirably situated for observation, commanding an extensive range of the Firth and its shores in all directions." - New Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] |

Mr. McCunn - whose ancestors have been in the neighbourhood for several centuries - told me that while one of his forefathers was ploughing or digging in the small field near Knockderry House a quantity of human bones were come upon, and seemed to indicate that a skirmish or battle had taken place on the spot. As near as he could gather from the tradition handed down in the family this occurred about 300 years ago. |

Mr. Clark Gamekeeper |
016 |
The mansion which formerly stood [here] was the residence of the Campbells of Larnock, cadets of the House of Argyll. Mr Lorn Campbell informed me that the remains of it were removed about 50 years ago. All that now remains to mark its site is an oblong grassy mound covered with a few trees. |

[Below entry for Wallace's Loup:]
"There is a precipitous rock of conglomerate on the north of the castle called Wallaces Leap which
is traditionally monumental of similar occurances at a less distant period in the south of the
peninsula. On one occasion, as the story goes, Wallace, having been hotly pursued by his
enemies, galloped in the direction of this cliff, and having no other way of escape, leaped his horse
from its lofty brink. The steed was killed upon the spot, Wallace made for the "Gareloch" swam across and so escaped his pursuers."

No remains of this Castle are now visible but Mr. Campbell informed me that it stood on the shore of Castle Bay and extended inwards towards the present House for a considerable distance, the wall next the shore was of great height but as the ground rises the other portions were only of moderate elevation. "An ancient castle stood on the shore of Campsaile-bay and seems to have served for centuries merely as a place of strength, but was fitted up about the year 1630 by the Marquis of Argyle as a subsidiary residence to the castle of Inverary. It underwent great changes and was eventually destroyed by fire about the commencement of the present century." Fullt. [Fullarton's] Gazetteer. |

A large and elegant mansion built about the beginning of the present century, the interior has not been quite finished and only a portion of the south west end is in a habitable state. "The edifice is in the modern Italian style, with combinations of GreeK and Gothic, One principal front looks to the north, and is adorned with a magnificent portico, which resembles in its style the Roman Ionic, and projects so far as to admit of a carriage way within it. Another principal front looKs to the south but is less marKed in feature. A Circular tower rises in the centre of the edifice, and is [C] by a balustrade, which commands a brilliant panoramic view.

"A belt of marine water, a long northward ramification of the frith of Clyde, extending between the district of Cowal, in Argylshire, and the parishes of Roseneath, Row, and Arrochar in Dumbartonshire. Over the whole of its length, it prevailing looks almost right along all the lower parts of the frith, and if it were but the inlet of a considerable river, would, as to both extent and direction possess far the highest claim to be regarded as the upper frith. It opens from the Clyde nearly opposite Gourock, and with a breadth of from 2 miles to 6 furlongs, stretches about 22 miles into the interior, at quarter distance from its entrance, it opens, on the west side, into the fine small bay of Ardintenny, and at half distance it sends off on the same side, and in a north westerly direction, Loch Goil. At two points on the Dumbartonshire side, it is distant respectively from the head of the Gareloch only 1¼ mile, and from Tarbet on Loch Lomond only 1¾ mile. Its general depth is from 15 to 20 fathoms, and its tidal current runs at the rate of about 2 miles in the hour. It is occasionally lined by a sandy beach, or pressed by hanging plains and banks of verdure, but in general is hemmed in, by declivitous or mural rocks. During summer two steamboats ply every lawful day from Glasgow up Loch Long, the one to Arrochar and the other to the head of Loch Goil, and during winter they ply three times a week." "A very beautiful branch of the frith of Clyde extending between the parishes of Roseneath and Row in Dumbartonshire. The frith coming down from the east and expanding its waters to the breadth of 3¾ or 4 miles, is cloven, 2 miles below the longitude of Greenock by the peninsula of Roseneath and sends away the Gare Loch north westward over a distance of 7½ miles. The Loch commences between the richly wooded castle point of Roseneath on the South, and the smiling village of Helensburgh stretching along the beach of Row parish on the North and is there 1¾ mile broad. A mile up it is overlooked, on its south side, by the tower of Roseneath castle peering out from an expanse of forest; on its north east side, nearly opposite, but a little higher, it is beautified by the turrets and plantations of Ardincaple. Here, having been gradually narrowed to less than ¾ of a mile it suddenly expands to a breadth of more than 1¼ mile. Three fourths of a mile onward, it is indented on the north side over nearly half its breadth by a point, or, in Gaelic, a Rhue, which gives name to the parish along its shore. Here, 100 yards or so respectively from its beach, stand on the one side the church of Roseneath, and on the other the church of Row. Near the Row or indenting point a long established ferry maintains easy and frequent communication across the loch; and hither during summer, the steamers five or six in number, which ply between Glasgow, Helensburgh, the Row, and Garelochhead career their way. At the head of the loch a neat smiling village has now assumed the place of a few wretched Highland Cabins which formerly stood here, and an excellent inn offers its accommodations to the stranger visitant. The water of Gareloch is generally clear, varies in depth along the centre from 10 to 30 fathoms, and is little affected in its saltness by the influx of rills, or the mixation of the waters of the Clyde. The current of the tide is strong, running from 3 to 4 miles in the hour, and owing to the projection of Row point, and of some minor horns or headlands, is varioius in its direction." The surmises indulged in regarding the origin of the name Rosneath are endless. Among the most plausible are Rhos-noeth, "the bare or unwooded promontory", Ros-na-choich, the virgin's promontory", and Ross-Neyt, "the point of Neyt or Neueth". The first is the derivation commonly accepted and corresponds with what is supposed to have been the condition of the peninsula in ancient times, the second is supported by the assertion that there was a church in the district, reared by an Earl of Lennox to the memory of the blessed Virgin, and the third by a practice observed among early writers of spelling the name Neueth and Neyt. This latter, however, is too slender a basis upon which to construct an etymology, for in the books of the very monastic establishment in which Rosneath is described as Neueth and Neyt, it is also called Rosneth and Rosnith. In the Cartularium de Levenax, the territory is described in one Charter |

as "ecclesiam de Reynt", and in the next as "ecclesia de Rosneth". The parish of Rosneath is so much of a peninsula, that among the inhabitants it is described in common parlance as "the island". At its point of junction with Row parish at Gareloch-head the distance from shore to shore is not above a mile. On the south, Rosneath is bounded by the Frith of Clyde, on the east by the Gareloch, on the west by Loch Long, and on the north by the parish of Row. Up till about the year 1643, Rosneath included within its boundaries the greater part of the present parish of Row, and was designated "the parochia within and without the isle", but at that time a disjunction was effected, and a parish church established on the east side of the Gareloch. The parish is exclusively agricultural, and has greatly increased in value by the improved cultivation adopted within recent years." (Irving's History.)
There is no Detached portion of this Parish in any other Parish, nor, is there any portion of any other Parish contained in any respect within the bounds of this Parish |
