OS1/9/13/55 [Page] 55 [This is a continuation from the first page of description for the parish of Luss, which no longer appears in Volume 13, but the object name has been added to page 1] however is that first given - Luss, a plant,- and which is not out of unison with the legend upon which the second is founded. - The parish of Luss is bounded by Arrochar on the north, Bonhill and Cardross on the south, Lochlomond on the east and Row on the west. Its length from north to south is fully 12 miles and it varies in breadth from 2½ to 5 miles. The parish was originally of much larger dimensions, having included the greater part if not the whole, of Arrochar on the North, Buchanan on the east side of Lochlomond, and the lands on the south of parish formerly alluded to as annexed to Bonhill in 1650. I lieu of these, however, Luss, in modern times has had added to it the lands of Caldanach, Prestelloch, and Conglens, which were formerly attached to the parish of Inchcalliach. The parish on the whole is agricultural, but in the neighbourhood of the village there are extensive slate quarries which have been wrought for many years with great success." (Irving's History of Dumbarton.) "This parish has its name from the Gaelic Lus signifying a plant or herb. Luss is the name of a small river, and the valley or glen through which it flows. As the church is situated at the influx of this river into Lochlomond, the name was extended to the parish. It was anciently written Luss, and is the same with the name of Luce in Galloway".- (New Stat Acc.) [New Statistical Account] There is no portion of this parish detached nor any portion of any other parish contained within the proper boundary of this parish.
OS1/9/13/55 Luss Parish has been entered on page 1, with no description as the first page relating to the entry is obviously lost. For situation details, v. page 1.
