"The name of this place is said to have been in ancient times, Caer-pen-tulach, which in the Cambro British Speech, signifies the fort on the head or end of the hill. The town of Kirkintilloch stands on the end or ridge of a hill and on a summit at the west end of the town, there is the remains of a Roman fort, which was one of the posts on the great Roman wall that passes this place. After a Church was founded here the name of Carpentulach was easily changed to Kirkintuloch which appears as the name of the place in charters that were granted in the end of the twelfth century. The ancient Church of Kirkintilloch was dedicated to Saint Ninnian. The present Parishes of Kirkintilloch and Cumbernauld were formerly comprehended in one Ph. [Parish], which was called Kirkintilloch till the end of the reign of James IV, and afterwards Lenzie or Lenye from the name of the Barony. The old Parish obtained the

appellation of Kirkintilloch from the town of that name, which is an ancient Burgh of Barony. In 1649 a decree of the Commissioners for the plantation of churches was obtained for dividing the Parish of Lenzie into two Parishes - The Church of the old Parish was deserted but the ruins of it with the burial ground are still extant about a mile south-east of the town of Kirkintilloch. The Virgin Mary's Chapel at Kirkintilloch became the Church of the Western Parish and a new Ch. [Church] was built for the eastern Parish in 1659 at Cumbernauld."
Chalmers' Caledonia
"Kirkintilloch is bounded on the north by the Parishes of Kilsyth and Campsie, in the County of Stirling; on the east by Cumbernauld; on the west by the Parish of Cadder; and on the South by the Parishes of Cadder and New Monkland, in the County of Lanark."
New Statistical Account
"A part of the Parish comprehending sections of both its town and its landward districts, and containing a population of 2700 was recently created into a Quoad Sacra Parish of St Davids" New Statl. [Statistical] Account.
The Kelvin, the Luggie & the Forth & Clyde Canal, are the principal waters in the Parish. The Railways are the Edinburgh & Glasgow which has one station partly in Kirkintilloch and partly in Cadder Parish, Lanarkshire; the Campsie Branch of the Edinburgh & Glasgow line; & the Kirkintilloch branch of the Monkland Raiways. The prinipal T.P. [Turn Pike] Trust is the Road from Glasgow to Edinburgh by Kirkintilloch, Kilsyth and Falkirk. There are several Branch Roads off this Road going to the same place - Edinburgh by Cumbernauld. One of these Branch T.P. [Turn Pike] Roads coming from the Cumbernauld & Glasgow Road through Mollinburn in Cadder, Lanarkshire, & through Badenheath in the south of this Parish (Trace 5. 25-11) ends at the Drawbridge on the Forth & Clyde Canal at Twechar. Bar Hill & Castle Hill are the only Hills of importance in the Parish. The Roman Wall passed on this Hill on which there is also a Fort called Barhill Fort. |

This name is given without any distinction to a number of houses on the north-west side of the Parish Road & also to a good Farm Steading (Trace 6 of this Plan). The Farm of "Easter Gallowhill" is indeed oftener used without the distinction "Easter" than with it. The Hill upon which the houses stand is unimportant both as a hill and with respect to its being an object of interest as might be inferred from the name. There is nothing known about "Gallowhill" farther than the name, which applies as described. The top of it has been sketched to shew in what manner the name would apply in that farm, and it appears that the arrangement on the Traces will apply better to the objects required than if written to the hill, which would

This is a mineral line of Railway which up to 1848 was used for passenger traffic and was up to that period called the "Monklands and Kirkintilloch Railway". In the year mentioned this line along with the Ballochney Railway and the Slamannan Railway were all amalgamated under the title of the Monkland Railways which title now applies to the whole system. The Company have dropped all the branch Titles or names and in referring to any particular part merely speak of them as crossings, gates & stations &c It has been considered necessary to adopt "Kirkintilloch Branch" to this line without the authority of the Railway Co. [Company] whose mode as "Monkland Railways" only would lead to confusion in other Parishes. (See Cadder Parish N [Name] Sheets with reference to this name)

Garngabber & Florabank (Trace 4. 25-9) are generally referred to by the name of the Junction, but this name cannot be given to anything else besides the object to which it belongs - the Railway Station. The names between "Bochara House", including Bochara and Garngabber, are merely known by the residents of the
Cottages on each side; and in some cases it has been found that tenants and Proprietors' Houses adjoining their neighbors are not known by any name although the occupants of each give a name to their own. Each name authorized of these Cottages has been properly identified by persons living here but it can't be said that any of them are known beyond the extent of the Cottages themselves. |

This height (Barhill) rises in a somewhat conical form, to an elevation of, we should say, about five or six hundred feet, terminating in two separate peaks of which that to the south is somewhat the highest It is nearly equi-distant from the two extremities of the Isthmus, and is the loftiest ground traversed by the Wall. The view from its summit is very extensive, embracing to the south a wide extent of Country, & only bounded on the east & west by the glistening water of the two opposite Firths. It was probably from this point that Agricola looked around him, when he first became aware of the peculiar geographical character of the district which enabled him to extend a line of forts from sea to sea; & his troops may have been the first of the Romans who established their quarters on its wind-beaten summit.
This the next Praetenturae stood of old on a level part of the height, about a furlong distant to the west of the northern or lowest of the two peaks. The Fort on Barhill was of a large size, and very strongly entrenched; measuring within the inclosure 340 feet square, and defended by a double circuit of Ramparts. (Note. Roy. Page 156, who states its distance from Auchindary at 3450 yards. Horsley says that it had been protected by treble envelopes on all sides but the north - Page 169). At one time the foundations of ancient buildings were exceedingly numerous here. Horsley observed several distinct lines of such ruins, and declares that when he visited it, the site of the Praetoreum was perfectly distinguishable. Many of these, indeed, have only been recently removed to supply materials for building, or to serve the purpose of inclosing the adjacent fields. The traces of the Barhill Station are still, however, to be faintly observed while the hollow of the great Ditch remains in excellent preservation near them. Unlike the Stations on the Wall, to the west, this stood detached from the Wall, and was situated a few yards to the south of its course. According to some Accounts the Military Way divided at this spot into two branches, one of them passing

passing by the northern side of the Fort while the other led directly through it. Both lines appear to have been perfectly distinct when Horsley visited the spot. - The only inscription which can be distinctly traced to Barhill is one taken notice of by Gordon, & which he describes as being cut upon the fragment of a pillar - Some vaults were, about the year 1790 laid open on Barhill, covered with flat bricks, as were those at Duntocher. Roman coins have likewise been met with at the same spot several of which - denarii of Trajan, Hadrian and Antoninus Pius, in the highest state of preservation - were procured by Professor Anderson, and are now deposited at Glasgow, in the museum of the institution which bears his name.
This Fort stands upon that part of the Bar Hill which is called "Castle Hill" (the description of which see) and terminated at the peak described on the other side. This Station is, from being on the Castle Hill of Barhill, often commonly called the "Castlehill Fort", but the best authorities both documentary and personal, call it by its proper name of "Barhill Fort". The Remains of the Fort are, with the exception of the inner side of the ditch on part of the north & the west sides, generally faint, but plainly discernable, as represented in position on the Examination Trace. There appears at the north-east angle of the Station, on the outer sides, remains as of a treble ditch. These are very distinct but not at all steep. (See Notes in Cal. [Caledonia] Romana, & on the other side, with reference to the north side not being defended with the treble ditch). There is no assistance to be had from authorities in the district as to whether the parts in question are or are not remains of a treble line of ditches at this part. The near approach of these faint traces to a regular form and being nearly parallel with the remains of the inner trench, as the representation on the Trace, which is a careful survey, shews would lead to infer that they formed a part of the Fort at one time.
Near the centre of the Station there is a slope falling towards the south and extending across nearly from east to west, which it is doubtful whether from the changes the entire Fort has undergone, it formed a part of the inner works or is merely a natural feature. It has been shewn as it appears on the ground, but it will be seen that it gives the fortification an unnatural appearance. The southern part of the Fort, on which there is a fence, is very faint. No remains of the Military Way passing either through or on the north side of the Fort are to be seen, nor is the Site known. During the winter of this year the Fort was dug & wrought with a pickaxe for the purpose of looking for some Roman remains, but nothing of importance was found except a stone foundation of a loose kind. The traces of ancient buildings within the fort have disappeared long since, & with them almost everything of interest except what remains of the "Barhill Fort" at the present time (1839). The existing remains are annually ploughed over in the course of cultivation, the whole of the ground in the field in which the Fort stands being arable land. The remains on the east side, near the centre, seem to have been an entrance to the Fort. They are very [faint]. |

The "Castle Hill", upon the Authorities quoted, is the highest point (on the north) of "Bar Hill", of which it is an indistinct separate feature, except at the peak, where the Trigl. [Trigonometrical] Station stands. The Fort & this peak or cone form the "Castle Hill" & between the fort & this high point the ground is very hollow, the tops terminating as represented on Traces. Some evident remains of intrenchments are to to be seen around the high point of Castle Hill, but no information can be obtained about it. There is just level ground enough between the bottom of this point & the ditch of the Roman Wall to admit of the breadth of the Wall. Whether these cuttings in the hill were made for a Castle which is supposed to have stood here & from which the name may have been taken, or whether they are Roman remains, there is nothing to shew nor could any information be obtained. From the conical point of Castle Hill, there is a ridge running down the noth side of the Hill & terminating at the "Strone point" of the Canal. The table of this ridge is about 7 or 8 chains from the R. [Roman] Wall - as sketched & Shewn on Examination Trace. |

"For the last two hundred and fifty years the site of the great northern rampart - known as the wall of Antoninus, from its having been constructed in his reign - has commanded the attention of not a few amongst those of our national antiquaries whose ardour led them to penetrate the recesses of the land - *** And seldom since the eye of the inquiring visitant first rested on the dilapidated traces of this ancient barrier, have many years been added in sucession to the "measure" of its age without one accidental circumstance or another exposing to light some fresh memorials of its Roman constructors; whose individual names appear at times before us, in sculpture as fresh as if the work of recent years, while the grandeur of their united labours has crumbled into dust. - This great military work, then, consisted in the first place, of an immense fosse or ditch - averaging about 40 feet in width by some twenty in depth - which extended over hill and plain, in one unbroken line from sea to sea. Behind this ditch, on its southern side, & within a few feet of its edge, was raised a rampart of intermingled stone and earth, strengthened by sods of turf; which measured, it is supposed, about 20 feet in height, and 24 in thickness at the base. This rampart or ager was surmounted by a parapet, behind which ran a level platform for the accomodation of its defenders. To the southward of the whole was situated the Military Way - a regular Causewayed road about 20 feet wide - which kept by the course of the wall at irregular distances, approaching in some places to within a few yards, and in others receding to a considerable extent. Along the entire line, from West Kilpatrick to Carriden, there were established, it is believed, Nineteen principal stations or forts; we cannot be quite certain of the number because, towards the east end of the wall, the traces of their existence have, for two centuries at least, been either very indistinct or entirely obliterated. Calculating by those whose remains have been plainly perceptible, the mean distance between each may be stated at rather more than two English miles. Along these intervals were placed many smaller Castella or Watch-towers of which only some two or three could be observed in the year 1755. While the continuous rampart seems to have been little more than a well-formed earthern mound, it is probable that many |

many, if not all the Stations, were either revetted with stone or entirely built of that material. In some places it would even appear that the Vallum itself had been raised upon a stone foundation - probably in situations where the ground was low & marshy, & where it was necessary to form drains beneath the works to prevent the accumulation of water on their interior side. Genl. [General] Roy supposes the Ditch to have constituted the chief strength of the whole, and seems to consider the agger itself as having been of very secondary importance. He was evidently led to this opinion from the insignificant appearance which even the best preserved of its sections presented when he saw them; it must, however, be remembered, as a circumstance highly probable, that the rampart was, in course of time, much more liable to be demolished than the fosse to be filled up - hence, perhaps, the distinct appearance of the one compared with that of the other." Caledonia Romana
The Remains of the Fosse or Ditch of the Roman Wall in this Parish, better known to the country people as "Graham's Heugh" and "Graham's Dyke" are, upon the whole, in a very imperfect state. On "Bar Hill" the best preserved parts remain, & here the Fosse has been in many places defaced. Where the hollow of the Ditch is to be seen almost every person in the neighborhood knows it; but where no remains are to be seen, the site is but imperfectly, if at all, correctly known: and if a person in the locality who is said to have a knowledge of its course be referred to for pointing it out, it is at once seen that the greater part of his, or their, information is founded upon conjecture, which, although it may in most cases be pretty correct from keeping the straight line between portions remaining on either side, it has been found unsafe to adopt the site upon such authority with any degree of certainty or of satistaction. There is but one place in the Parish where the remains of the Rampart or wall exist. This is in a plantation close to the Ditch on the east side of "Bar Hill". There is nothing known of this in the locality but its appearance plainly shows what it has been by the slight ridge sloping faintly from the top; and the different nature of the soil composing the Remains. At no part of the Parish do any Remains of the "Military Way" which kept by the south of the wall exist; & there seems to be but one place where any information respecting it is to to be had in this Parish - at Whitehill (Trace 2 25-5) as stated upon the authority of Mr. Gillys & Mr. G. Buchanan, where a Roman Sword was found beneath the Causeway. The plough is here impeded in passing over this part, but not the least trace of a causeway is to be seen upon the surface of the ground. The Remains of the Forts of Barhill and Auchindavy - the latter Fort is but slightly remaining, are shewn as they at present stand. The Fort of Kirkintilloch, better known as the "Peel", is the best preserved of the Roman Remains in the Parish. The "Peel" is on the 1/500 Scale. - The appearance of the Fosse in this Parish presents five different shades - as in the Parish of Cumbernauld (Which see), and in order to insure their perfect representation, each shade has been numbered on the Examination Traces suitable to their respective parts. Care has also been taken throughout to shew the precise extent of the hollow as it appears at the present day (1859). Those parts numbered 1 represent the faintest parts of the Ditch, shewing the proper top & the bottom of the hollow, which is just definable. The parts Nod. [numbered] 2 are a little deeper than those of No. 1; 3 has a better defined top & is still deeper; 4 is nearly equal to an ordinary cutting - on a Railway, for instance, but not quite so steep or regular on the top; 5 is a well defined & steep slope. This index is also applicable to the remains of the Forts in this Parish, but it may here be stated that no parts of the Forts approach the greatest steepness of the Fosse or Ditch by within two shades, and this only occurs in the "Bar Hill Fort", in two cases. |

Remains of Fosse or Ditch of Roman Wall } Continued |
|
024 ; 025 |
The Track of the Ditch of the Roman Wall, which may be traced by a hollow in the ground, varying as described on the preceding page, where it enters this Parish on the eastern Boundary, coming from "Croy Hill" in Cumbernauld Parish, as identified by the Estate Map of Gartshore, Captain Murray Gartshore Pr. [Proprietor], and William Wallace Esqr. of Auchinvole, may be traced to the Farm of "Bar" on the west side & near to the bottom of "Bar Hill". (The part described comprises Trace 3. 25-2. Trace 1 and 2 25-3) Beneath the conical point of "Castle Hill" which is a prominent feature of the "Bar Hill", and a few chains to the eastward it is steeper than at any other part of the Ditch in the Parish. This part is also very remarkable from the Toll Road to Kilsyth, which lies to the east, about the bottom of the Hill, being seen to great advantage as it (the Ditch) ascends the side of the Hill to the sharp point of "Castle Hill". Following the course of the Wall westwards to the Bar farm, there is an Occupation Road formed upon the Fosse; and this Road is, particularly at the Steading, some 6 or 8 or 10 feet below the surface of the fields on either side, shewing unmistakeable evidence of the depth of the Ditch. From the farm of Bar to the "Coke Works" south-west of Twechar (Trace 5. 25-2) all traces are filled in and the course, as before mentioned, merely conjectured. From the "Coke Works" to the point where the "Forth & Clyde Canal" crossed the line of wall in direction of "Shirva" (Trace 4. 25.2) an old Public Road is formed in the Fosse, part of which is only faintly to be seen at intervals and the road itself is in some places sunk below the level of the fields on both sides. This portion was identified by Dr. [Doctor] Stewart of Kirkintilloch & John Cross of Gartshore. About Shirva, which is famed for the numerous Roman Sculptured Remains found in its neighborhood, & as stated in the Caledonia Romana (Page 327) of the existence of a Tumulus, of which no traces appear, nor is there anything known in the locality nor by persons who have to some extent studied the Antiquities of the northern Wall. It is mentioned in the Cal. [Caledonia] Romana (P. [Page] 327) that it "seems exceedingly probable that the vicinity of Shirva had been selected as the burial place of the neighboring garrisons whether it be that the monuments of their dead had stood amid the abodes of men, or in the solitude & silence of the adjacent thickets". ____ There is but a very slight portion of the north side of the Fosse now remaining at Shirva, & this has been shewn upon the authority of Dr. [Doctor] Stewart. At "Wester Shirva", as pointed out on the authority of Mr. J. Maitland Pr. [Proprietor], slight traces of the south side of the Ditch are to be seen on the east of the Steading (Trace 4. 25-2). Retracing from this point, back to Shirva, the line of Wall or Ditch is said to be indicated by a different appearance in the soil, but this is only seen for a short distance between the |

the Bridge over the "Board Burn", & the "Ruin" at "Shirva" where a part of one side of the Fosse, before described, is to be seen. There is not the faintest sign of a hollow to be seen here now. From Wester Shirva to the Fort of "Auchindavy" the track of the Ditch, which is known to have kept close to the south side of the old Steading of "Shirva Dyke", is entirely obliterated; and it is only faintly to be seen, as pointed out by Mr. J. Duncan, from the Fort to where the Forth & Clyde Canal again crosses it. The connection of the Fosse is broken off at one place between "Auchindavy" & the Canal. The well known "Roman Well", of which there is nothing very remarkable in the appearance or depth, stands at the top of the south side of the present form of the Fosse, within the Fort, & near to its north eastern junction with the Wall. Of the Fort of Auchindavy the Caledonia Romana in making mention of the Roman Antiques found here says that, "Among the principal discovery of recent years have been various fragments of Roman Pottery - a deep hollow, containing charcoal & ashes - a deposit of Stone bullets about the size of 24 pound shot, lying many feet under the surface; and a Well of excellent Water, surrounded with masonry, and covered by a Stone slab, over which the soil had accumulated to a considerable depth. All these were found within what was the area of the Station; the Stone bullets had no doubt been at one time deposited beside some of the projectile engines which had stood upon the platform of the rampart; & the Well is, we should say, unquestionably that which had supplied the ancient garrison." At the south west angle of one of the office houses of Auchindavy, within the area of the Fort, there is a stone built into the wall, having the figure of a Roman, about 6 inches in height, cut upon it. The stone is built in with the head downwards. The Continuation of the Fosse after crossing the Canal from "Auchindavy", is again seen on the farm of Eastermains, from which point to Whitehill (Trace 2. 25-2) & from Whitehill to Hillhead (25-2-4), as pointed out by Mr. Gillies & Mr. G. Buchanan, the Remains are just traceable by the faintest hollow varying slightly, in greater depth, at "Eastermains" where, near the Well which stands in the fosse, a Legionary Stone was found - upon the last two authorities quoted, but at what exact place is not known. (See Cal. [Caledonia] Romana P. [Page] 320). To the south of Whitehill a roman Sword was found (at the spot marked on Trace) in what appears to have been the track of the Military Way, judging from its distance off the Ditch, & the Stony or Causewayed appearance which these stones are said to form in the ground. In the field where the Ditch track is again picked up after passing Whitehill, the farmer of Cleddans, on which Farm the field is, filled in the Fosse about two years ago. Previous to this the remains were in good preservation. At Hillhead going westwards to the Fort of Kirkintilloch, better or commonly known as the "Peel" (on 1/500 Scale) the Course of the Ditch takes along the bottom of the gardens close to "Banks" & there are now several wells formed in it, but the hollow is entirely filled in. The track is not again seen until within a short distance of the Park Burn - the By. [Boundary] of the Ph. [Parish] at this part - in the west near "Adamslee" (Trace 4 & 5. 24-8) where, upon the authority of Dr. [Doctor] Stewart & the last three personal authorities quoted in the Column of Authorities, the south side of the Ditch would appear to have been formed out of a natural ridge which [ridge] running westwards from the "Peel", & which is also known as the ridge where a wall stood, terminates at the western By. [Boundary] of the Parish, while the continuation of the Ditch of the Roman Wall may be seen to the west of the By. [Boundary] in Cadder Ph. [Parish], Lanarkshire. |

"At the distance of rather more than a mile & three quarters from Kirkintilloch, we reach the Farm house of Auchindavy, situated within what was the area of the next Roman Station to the east of the Peel.Until within the last twenty years, the outline of the ramparts, the excavation of the moats, and the general form of the inclosure, were tolerably distinct; but finding those "Canals", as the trenches were called by the people of the neighborhood, to be rather in his way, the proprietor of the ground has had the surface levelled, and almost every vestige of the ancient works removed. This Fort may be said to have belonged, at all events, to the second, if not the first class of the Wall Stations. It measured within the interior Valla about 370 by 300 feet, and was defended with a triple line of Ramparts and ditches - the Military Way passing, as in most of the other Stations, directly through its centre. The ground on which it stood is but slightly elevated with a gradual descent towards the north; a century ago the place was marshy, & the trenches were for the most past filled with water: at present it is thoroughly drained & cultivated, with little appearance of water in the vicinity, save where the glistening surface of the Forth & Clyde Canal shows itself beyond a small plantation to the south of the Farm Steading. _ Among the principal discoveries of recent years have been various fragments of Roman pottery - a deep hollow, containing charcoal & ashes - a deposit of Stone bullets, about the size of a 24-pound shot, lying many feet under the surface; and a Well of excellent water, surrounded with masonry, and covered by a stone slab, over which the soil had accumulated to a considerable depth. some of the projectile engines which had stood upon the platform of the Rampart; and the Well is, we should say, unquestionably that which had supplied the ancient Garrison. - Mr. Gough mentions, in his additions to Camden, that there formerly existed the remains of a Roman Bridge, consisting of five arches, which led across a Morass in the neighborhood. This Bridge has not been taken notice of by any preceding author; but it may not unlikely have been a work of the legionary soldiers, by whom no labour was spared in improving the various localities in which they were settled." Caledonia Romana
All that now remains of the great works of this Fort is a sloping but very faint hollow on what was no doubt the east side of the Station. No remains of the Military Way are to be seen all traces of it as well as the other parts of the Fort being entirely obliterated. At the south west angle of one of the Office houses of the Farm, there is a stone built into the Wall having the figure of a Roman about 6 inches in height, cut upon it. This stone is built in with the head of the figure downwards. The traces of all the ancient buildings, as well as the Roman Br. [Bridge] of which no one knows of in the locality, are destroyed. The steading stands within the Fort, & all the ground outside of the houses is cultivated. The Roman Well, which is well known, stands on the top of the present form of the Fosse, & a drain, which upon the personal authorities quoted, is a Roman Drain flows into it from beneath what was the interior of the Fort. |

This Well is Known generally as a Roman Well, & it is remarKable for having a small narrow drain flowing into it from the Fort of Auchindavy, within which the well is situated on the top of the present form of the ditch of the great or Roman Wall. The drain which is said to be Roman has never been explored. The depth of the Well is not more than an ordinary one being 6 feet or thereabouts in depth. The place where the Stone bullets were found is between the remains of one side of the Fort & the office house in which the stone having the Roman figure upon it stands. But the proper or exact place is not Known. |

A Stone Bridge of two Arches over the Luggie, on the line of Road (Turnpike) from Mollinsburn to KirKintilloch & Twechar. The west side of the Bridge is supposed to be very old. The tradition is that it was made at the time of Badenheath Tower by Lord Kilmarnock, hence the name. The original width of the Bridge, which may be seen beneath the arches, was about half its present size in the road way across it. The foundations of My Lord's Bridge have been more than once nearly swept away by floods in the River. Of its age there is nothing authentic known. New parapets have recently been put on. It is A County Bridge. |
