022 | The place occupied by the flag-staff on the west side, marks the highest pinnacle of the rock and is called "Wallace's Seat", It is a small bare natural space having a winding pathway leading to it, and commands a view of the surrounding country, Though not mentioned in any history referring to the "Castle" it is supposed by mere tradition quoted by those appointed to guide visitors through the place, together with the first authority quoted for the name, that Sir William Wallace in company with a few of his retainers ascended the rock from the shore one night and took the fort by surprise, their first place - see page [39] [continued on previous page 39] |
