The ruins of an Old Chapel, the east end of which is roofed, and occupied as a burial Vault.
"Of the subordinate chapel at Kilmahew, not much more is known than can now be ascertained about the parish church itself. David II conferred the lands, and also the chapel upon Roger Cochrane, but early in the 15 Century they appear to have been in the possession of the Napiers, who held them for many succeeding generations. In 1467, the Chapel seems to have been rebuilt in May of that year. George Bishop of Argyle in mitre & pontificals and with the full permission of the Bishop of Glasgow, consecrated a Chapel and Cemetry there dedicated to St. Mahew and granted in name and by consent of Duncan Napier & James Napier his heir 40 Shillings and tenpence." A Cave in the face of a rocky precipice near Clarkhill, Mr. McArthur says that it extends in for about 20 yards as he at one time reached the end of it with a pole.
"On the lands of Ardoch is situated the Cave of Ardoch reputed at one time to have been a favourite resort of Lennox Witches, and which is supposed to have had an outlet at its northern extremity. A tradition, no doubt, founded on the Elfish Chant, "In at the flow of the Havock and out at the Yetts o' Carman, This is the only memory of a once popular superstition which still lingers in the locality" Irvine's History of Dumbartonshire |

Full. [Fullarton's] Gazetteer |
022 |
A small wooded eminence immediately west of a farm house of the same name. It is traditionally handed down that a residence, of King Robert Bruce, had been here. No vestige of it now remains.
"On an eminence in the southwestern extremity of the parish still known as Castelhill, the King built a castle suitable to his dignity, and in the latter part of his life took seclusion as frequently as the state of public affairs permitted. In the household accounts of the Grand Chamberlain, we see Bruce enjoying himself at Cardross in company with his nephew, Randolph. At one time he is busy building Vessels, then he is making experiments in sailing them, at another time he is improving his hunting establishment, and again he is found improving the Castle or adorning the pleasure grounds, It was to Cardross Bruce retired, when a desease, contracted amid the hardships of the battlefield, seemed likely to prove fatal, and in a chamber of the castle there did the Restorer of Scottish Independence breathe his last. Every vestige of the building itself has been long since destroyed."

The name of this parish may have originated either from Caer Ross "the Castle point" or Caer Ross "the point of the moorish ridge" the first derivation has reference to the point of land opposite Dumbarton Castle, upon which the parish church stood in old times, and the second to the physical characteristics of that point of land. The parish is of an irregular shape, and extends from north west, where it is bounded by the parish of Row, to south east where it is bounded by the Leven, its boundary on the south and west is the River Clyde, and on the east and north east the parish of Bonhill. Before the middle of the seventeenth century, Cardross did not extend much further west than the site of the present church, but when the parish of Row was detached from Rosneath, Cardross had added to it the whole of the valuable lands west to Camiseskan, in lieu of certain detached portions in Glenfruin, and Garelochside, which lay naturally into the newly formed parish. "the most noticeable fact is, that for several years it was one of the residences of Robert Bruce. As a whole the parish of Cardross is of an agricultural character, but at its south eastern boundary where it is watered by the Leven, there is a large population connected with the different manufacturing establishments in the vale". (Irving's History) "Bounded on the south by the Clyde, its modern extent stretches westward from that point along the shores of the Clyde, until it joins the parish of Row, near Helensburgh. On the north, its boundary with Luss and Bonhill parishes follows the ridge of Hills in an easterly direction, till above Renton it descends upon the Leven which river forms its eastern limit, its greatest length is 8 miles, and its breadth varies from 1½ to 3 miles, giving a surface of about 16 square miles the superficial character of the ground does not admit of much variety, rising on either hand from the Clyde and the Leven by a gradual ascent the ridge thus formed does not present much irregularity, and is not intersected by any valleys of importance, nor by any considerable streams or lakes". (New Stat. Act. [Statistical Account]) On the opposite side of the Leven to Dumbarton, the parish of Cardross rises from the shores of Clyde and Leven, by a gradual ascent northwards, for upwards of two miles, to the ridge of the hills which bound the valley of Lochlomond. Anciently it appears not to have extended much farther along the bank of the Clyde than the site of the parish church, but some lands in Glenfruin and on the Gareloch, and even as far as Loch Long, belonged to it, which were separated from it in 1643 when the parish received an addition on its western boundary". (Origines Parochiales Scotiae) No portion of this parish is detached, nor any portion of any other parish contained within the proper boundary of this parish. |
