026 | In 1649 a decree of of the Commissioners for the plantation of churches was obtained for dividing the Parish of Lenzie into two Parishes. The Church of the old Parish was deserted but the ruins of it with the burying ground are still extant about a mile south-east of the town of Kirkintilloch. The Virgin Mary's Chapel at Kirkintilloch became the Church of the western Parish, and a new church was built for the eastern Parish, in 1659, at Cumbernauld". Chalmers' Caledonia. "The Parish Church is an old building repaired in 1810 and containing 660 Sittings." Fullarton's Gazetteer The Incumbent of the Parish Church believes the present building to be, with the exception of the modern additions - the wing on the north side, and a part added to the west end, the first or original church of the Parish on its being erected out of Lenzie - the ancient name of Kirkintilloch & Cumbernauld, into a Separate Parish in 1649.
