061 [Situation] In the Orchard attached to Ruthwell Manse,
A large Stone pillar about 18 feet high the top of which is a cross, on one side of this pillar is sculptured the Runic language and on the other the Roman,
In 1642 this ancient Monument was destroyed or partly so, by order of the General Assembly of the Church on account of the people Idolizeing it, In 1802 it was caused to be put up, by the Rev Dr [Reverend Doctor] Duncan not in the church. where it formerly stood, but in the garden attached to it, where it is still to be seen standing)
