This is a strong massive building well calculated for a place of strength and supposed to have been built about 300 years ago at least, no date or memorial of the founding of the castle has hitherto been found although it has been diligently sought after. it was supposed to have been inscribed on the lintel stone over the Kitchen fire place but that having been accidentally broken and replaced by a wooden one the date no longer exists. The Proprietor roofed the castle anew about the year 1811. From the top of it a fine view of the Solway Firth and the mountains of Cumberland can be obtained
A fine genteel residence with offices now stands adjoining the castle occupied by Mr. Phillips Factor to the Earl of Mansfield
