visible in part, but which contains nothing but what has often been described. The Romans have in this line put down long paving-stones, as the more durable mode of working. "Vestiges of a Roman Camp can be distinctly traced in the N.W. of the district. Some Roman encampments can be distinctly traced in the neighbourhood of the Roman Road". Old Stat. Vestiges of encampments called in the district Forts throughout this Parish, similar in formation and dimensions to others shown in various Parishes and which by various authorities have been considered either as Pictish fortifications or cattle shelters during the time of border feuds. There are ruins of several old Towers or Peel houses in different parts of the Parish, which from their small dimensions and the want of historical notice seem to have been unimportant as places of defence. The Knights Templar are believed to have had a Chapel at a place called Walls. The gable end of the Old Parish Church is yet extant, which edifice was erected in 1601 and disused in 1790.
