OS1/10/36/1 LOCHMABEN [parish] Lochmaben Lochmaben Lochmaben Walker's Map of Scotland Johnstone's Map of Dumfriesshire Crawford's Map of Dumfriesshire 042; 050; 051; 056 The Name of the Parish is of doubtful origin. Tradition reports that a Nunnery existed at an early age on an Island in one of the largest lochs from which circumstance Gaelic Maigdenn is supposed to be the derivation - thus to signify the Loch of Maidens. Dr [Doctor] Jamieson asserts however that such is a wrong interpretation of the Name as Maigdian is not a pure gaelic word but borrowed from the Gothic. The mude [mode?] of orthography as P [per] an old deed granted by Robert I to Carruthers of Mussald is "at our Manor of Lochmalban". If this be the original spelling, the probability is that the name is compounded of "loch, maol and ben or ban" - "the Loch of the bald Eminence". - Bald might with propriety be interpreted - destitute of foliage, for even at this date, the great desideratum in this Parish are Trees.
OS1/10/36/1 Situation: Towards SWn extremity of Dumfriesshire between the Parishes of Johnstone, Dryfesdale, Applegarth, Dalton, Mouswald and Torthorwald. Extra info: The Parish of Lochmaben is bounded on the North by that of Johnstone, - on the East by Applegarth, Dryfesdale and Dalton, on the South by Dalton and Mouswald, - And on the West by Torthorwald, Tinwald and Kirkmichael. - The Boundaries at North-West corner are defined by Kinnel Water, - at the North, undefined and by wall and drain, - on the East principally by River Annan, a small portion of Dryfe Water, small [?runners], hedge paling and bank, - on the South by hedge, paling, bank, wall and Rangegill Burn, - on the West by wall, bank, Raemoor Burn, drain, Water of Ae and also are undefined+. - The shape is pretty compact and approaches to that of an oblong with points projecting 1 and 1 1/2 mile respectively at the South-west and South-east corners. -The Statistics state the extreme length to be 10 miles and breadth 3 miles and to contain 16 3/4 square miles or 10,750 a. The length however does not exceed 8 7/8 miles and mean breadth 2 1/3 miles, making the Area about 17 3/4 miles or 11,360 Impl [Imperial] Acres, of which 9,385* may be arable and lea or meadow land, 1350 permanent or holm pasture, 120 wood and 500 Moss And irreclaimable moor. - The surface may be considered plain and level, the only exception being towards the West where it was to a height of about 500 feet, but which can scarcely be called hilly for the entire soil is cultivated so gentle is the acclivity. - The soil varies, towards the west, it is light, gravelly and cold, the average part of which is £1.2.6 P [per] acre, - Along the banks of the principal Streams it is a rich alluvial loam, which is greatly enriched by deposits from the frequent overflows of these Streams. - The soil in the neighbourhood of the Town of Lochmaben is dry and productive, the average rent of which is £2.15.0 P [per] Acre. - Patches of Moss frequently occur from which the inhabitants procure peat for fuel. - Towards the South and South-West the land is partly Moor. - The whole land is well enclosed and the Farm Steadings generally are Commodious and in good repair. - There is an abundant supply of Water, there are 9 Lochs vizt. Castle Loch which has an Area of 220 Acres, Halleaths or Broomhill Loch 80 Acres, Kirk Loch 60 Acres, Hightae Loch 52 Acres, Mill Loch 32 1/2 Acres, Upper Loch 14 Acres, Grassyard Loch 3 Acres and two others Blind Lochs on Nn [Northern] Parish Boundary of 3 Acres. - All these Lakes with the excemption of the last three are clustered near centre of Parish. The larger Streams are Kinnel Water from N W point of Parish running S.E. to River Annan, River Annan on En [Eastern] Boundary running South, Dryfe Water also on En [Eastern] Boundary and Water of Ae (also) on Nn [Northern] Boundary: there Are also numerous Springs, wells and runners the Water of which along with that of the Lochs is used with safety by the inhabitants for culinary purposes. Coal or other mineral has never been discovered. - Red Sandstone is regularly and extensively worked in Corncockle Quarry and Redhall Quarry. - No Manufactory exists. *The Areas of Castle, Halleaths, Kirk, Upper, Mill and Hightae Lochs are included in this and the wood, - 458 acres falling to be deducted there from. - +There is no detached portion of Lochmaben within the Boundaries of Another Parish, nor within its limits as above described a portion of any other Parish
OS1/10/36/2 but weaving is carried on by many of the inhabitants in connection with Carlisle and Glasgow houses. There is no Railway, but it is contemplated to form a branch from Dumfries to Lockerbie in connection with the Caledonian Railway._ The Turnpike Road towards Nn[Northern] Parish Boundary runs N. N. E. for about 4 miles to Lochmaben, but it is seldom frequented, a road at the East side of Parish having been found more convenient; these Roads converge however at Lochmaben, the Turnpike then pursues its course to the South of the Town where it is divergent to the great Carlisle Road via Lockerbie and to Annan respectively traversing 2 1/4 miles S. E. and 2 3/4 S. S. E through Parish. Another Turnpike Road runs from Lochmaben N.N.E. for about 2 miles, where after having crossed Kinnel Water, two branches strike off [] to the N.E. through Applegarth and N to Moffat via Beattock running a respective distance of 1 and 1 3/4 miles through Parish._ There are numerous other Roads all in excellent condition. Lochmaben situate near the centre of Parish 8 miles from Dumfries is a Burgh, but at what date erected thereto cannot be traced;-all its records having been twice burnt during the inwads[invades?] of the English. It is generally supported however, that it was constituted a Burgh by King Robert Bruce._ Jame VI, on 16th July 1612 granted a Novodamus of its Charter . By a summons yet extant wherein the Duke of Albany was cited in 1497 to answer the charge of treason, it would thereby appear that the citation was executed at Dumfries and also "apud cruceum fore burgi de Lochmaben". It unites with Dumfries, Annan, Sanquhar and Kirkcudbright in sending a member to Parliament:- The Parliamentary Boundaries are thus described in the Burgh Records "From the point on the North-East of the town near Bogle Hole at which a Burn crosses the road to the Bridge on Kinnel Water, in a straight line to a point on the Bank of the Castle Loch which is distant five hundred yards in a straight line to the South-East of the summit of the Knoll of the Old Castle; thence in a straight line to a point on the Dumfries road which is distant five hundred yards (measured along the Dumfries Road) to the West of the Town House; thence in a straight line to a point which is four hundred yards due West of the point first mentioned; thence in a straight line to the point first described"._Present Parliamentary Constituency 38.- It haslong been Bankrupt, however, a Provost, three Bailies, a Dean of Guild, 9 Councillors and a Town Clerk watch over its interests. From the Parish to the North extremity of Town Hall the High Street runs 28 chains North and forms the South portion of the Town. It is spacious. In it are several shops and genteel houses two storeys high. Bruce Street extends from near the West side of the Town Hall 17 Chains W. along the road to Dumfries, - near its Eastern extremity West Street branches off running nearly 21 Chains N.N.E. where converging with East Street which extends from the Town Hall to this point, the town is again represented by a single street running N.N.E. for about 30 chains and in which are two detached ranges of Cothouses respectively Barras and Boglehole. Two narrow Streets or Alleys lying between West and East Streets called Castle Street and Well Street nearly intersect each other._ All the houses with the exception of a few in High Street and Bruce Street are one storey high and in indifferent repair. The Town Hall surmounted by a spire with clock facing the South is small and not altogether inelegant, especially as seen when entering High Street from the East;- the upper apartments therein are set apart for Town Council Conventions, but when opportunity offers, they are readily let out to itinerant dancing masters. [??] on the ground floor there is a loathsome Lockup or Jail also an apartment in which the Meal Market is held._ The Market Cross is immediately in front, a relic chiefly remarkable for its ori=ginal costliness (see Page 3*). _ The Parish Church at the Sn. [Southern] extremity of Town is a handsome and most substantial building, and its elegancy in respect to the Burgh's general character and appearance - may be said to be its greatest blemish._ The Free Church near the South extremity of East Street is a plain structure._ The United Presbyterian Church at Nn [Northern] extremity of Barras is also a plain but substantial building. There are also a Parish School - a Public Library connected therewith - a Free Church School - a Branch Office of the National Bank of Scotland and three well conducted Inns A Sub Post Office and two Manses respectively belonging to the Parish Church and the Free Church all within the Burgh - Number of Proprietors 141 - Population 1,100._ There are also 5 Villages viz Hightae about 2 1/2 miles South of Lochmaben, which consists of one Street flanked on the West by numerous detached houses and a short street extending from its N. W. extremity-S. W. - in it , are a Sub Post Office and good Inn. Population about 460._ Heck a hamlet about 1 mile N. of Hightae may have a population of about 80. Greenhill also a hamlet about 3/4 mile N.E. of Hightae has a population of 96. Smallholm distant from Hightae consisting of about a dozen Cothouses has a population of 65. All the houses in these villages are one storey high and in indifferent repair. Population thereof are for the most part composed of small Proprietors. They constitute the Fourtowns of Lochmaben (see Page 3),_ Templand situate on the Moffat road is a more modern village and its population numbering about 110 are chiefly agricultural labourers._ Mr Dickson of Elshishields [Elsieshields] is its superior who supports a School in it, - it has also the advantage of a sub-Post Office. The principal Mansions in this Parish are Elshieshields, Halleaths and Newmains or Broadchapel, - the public buildings [viz?] are a Parish Church erected by the heritors in 1819 at an expense of £3000- its site is central and convenient - it can acommodate upwards of 1,700. Patron the Earl of Mansfield - Stipend £265 with a Manse and Glebe, the latter of £10 Annual value, - an United Presbyterian Church which is seated for about 900 - built 1818. Stipend £80.
OS1/10/36/3 ..a Cameronian Church 1 1/2 mile S.S.E. of Hightae, erected 1796 by the Relief Congregation - was sold by them to the present Owners for £70 - is capable of holding about 400, but there are only about 40 members - stipend £50. A Free Church which can accommodate 600 - was erected 1843-4. Stipend about £120 with Manse. Two Parish Schools, supported in a great measure from an endowment by James Richardson Merchant Reading, who mortified £200, in 1726 for the one in the Burgh, £100 to Hightae School with £20 for its erection - A public library also partly upheld by a bequest of £100 from Mr Richardson, which is kept in the Burgh Schoolmaster's home, _ a Public or Town Hall, a Lockup, Market place, a Bank, three sub Post Offices, four Inns, a Free Kirk School and a Subscription School. The number of Proprietors in landward part of the Parish is 106 which with three of the Burgh make a grand total of 247 Heritors or Proprietors. Number of inhabited houses 618 - Population 2900. The Western or Nithsdale Roman Road as reported by General Roy and as shown in his map in the lower part of Annandale traversed from a point near the junction of the Kinnel and Annan, N.W.W. through this Parish passing close to Woody Castle Camp. _ The District wherein it traversed has been entirely cultivated within the last 30 years. _ In several places pavement or [----?] has frequently been dug up, and several respectable locals state that from personal inspection, a large portion of the Roman Road was quite visible and in excellent preservation previous to the improvements. Though the track is now entirely effaced these Authorities have no doubt as to its site. _ A Camp called Woody Castle is still traceable by its intrenchments on a Knoll in the Vicinity of the Burgh, which though of round formation General Roy and Antiquarian Authorities term a Roman Post._(See "Wood Castle" in General Roy's R. Antiquities) Some Authorities in locality state that this Knoll is the site of an ancient Castle - hence the name Woody Castle. _ No mention of this Castle is made by any authority._Two small earthern works in Plan 42/7 can only be classified as Hill Forts. A Castle is generally allowed to have stood on Castle Hill which was founded by de Brus family during 12th Century and which is supposed to have been the original Lochmaben Castle - the birthplace of King Robert Bruce - that it was demolished by that Monarch, and the building material appropriated to the erection of the existing Lochmaben Castle._ Authorities are however conflicting viz. A small portion of Lochmaben Castle with its defences can be still visible on a neck of land jutting a considerable way into the South of Castle Loch. At the entrance of this isthmus, a fosse is still distinctly seen, which is said to have admitted the Water of the Loch at both ends and so to have converted the site of the Castle into an Island. Other three if not four fosses are also visible and occur at brief intervals in the Approach to the fortress. What remains of the structure itself is only the heart of the walls. This Castle with appendages originally covered a space of 16 Acres. It was upheld until the Union and previous thereto was reckoned one of the strongest Border Fortresses. It sustained many sieges being at all times much coveted by the English Monarchs, but perhaps it derives more celebrity from its association with King Bruce._ The Date when founded is doubtful, though often attributed to the 13th Century._ The villages called the Fourtowns of Lochmaben were bound to furnish a certain number of cattle and other provision to the Garrison and also to fill up any deficiency in the number of its defenders - as an equivalent King Bruce granted to them small portions of land, - or rather to inhabitants thereof - and which many of the descendants still hold without any Title or Deed thereto._ They were called the King's kindly tenants. Three Border Towers existed in this Parish; two of which still remain respectively at Elshieshields and Old Spedlins both towards N.Wn. extremity of Parish. No traces of the other one exist. The Market Cross of Lochmaben is a pillar surmounted by a cross._ As predecessor was destroyed in 1479. Some building materials then remaining over at the erection of Elshieshields Tower, the Magistrate of the Burgh purchased them for the purpose of erecting the present cross and as the price thereof made over to the Owner of the Tower, Lochmaben Mill and Mill lands.*_ Near the Southern extremity is Rockhall Moat said to be of very ancient date but still in excellent preservation._ It was at one time called Beacon Hill, from which it has been disputed whether it was used as a Watch or Beacon Post or Moat ._ Several Chapels are reported to have existed within this Parish, of which there are now no visible trace or remains._ The sites of these are still [p---tted?] out viz. Rokele Chapel near Rockhall Moat, St Thomas' Chapel near the middle of Wn. Parish Boundary and another towards Nn district. Little information can be obtained respecting them, only that Rokele Chapel belonged to the Earl of Glencairn as in 1223 after a lengthly disputation with the Monks of Gysburn[?] it was specially reserved to William of Glencairn._ The site of St. Magdalene's Church has been shewn. It was originally a fine Gothic edifice with a very large choir therein, belonged to the Monks of Gysburn to whom it was granted by Robert de Brus who received it. *This Property now yields and annual rent of £100. which may in some measure account for the Bankruptcy of the Parish.
OS1/10/36/3 Although I have completed the page, there are a few words I still can't get. They are all in square brackets.
OS1/10/36/4 from William the Lion in 1183 on the occasion of his marriage with the bastard daughter of that monarch. It was burnt in 1592 or 1600, the day subsequent to the Battle of Dryfesands by the Johnstones of Annandale on account of the Maxwells having taken refuge therein and their refusal to surrender to the victors. Near the site of this church and also in the Burgh is a well also consecrated to St. Mary Magdalene, the water of which doubtlessly the [quack?] specific of the Monks of Gysburn.
OS1/10/36/4 I've queried "quack" as it does not fit in with the sentence.

OS1/10/36/107 LOCHMABEN CASTLE (Remains of) Lochmaben Castle - or the Royal Castle of Lochmaben William Harkness Esqr. Andrew Johnston Esqr. Mr. John Brotch 050 Lochmaben Castle or the Royal Castle of Lochmaben as it is sometimes termed, situate about a mile from the Burgh upon a heart shaped peninsula jutting a considerable way into the south side of Castle Loch, forms the grand attraction of this parish. There are however many conflicting statements as to its founder and date, but the most generally credited tradition is, that founded by king Robert Bruce before his succession to the Scotch Throne, its date is that of the 13th. century, neither the career of Bruce at this period nor any documentary evidence support this assumption, but on the contrary there is yet extant a record shewing that Randolph Earl of Murray was Lord of Annandale and about this period in possession of this fortification. The original structure covered a space of 16 acres. Across the isthmus at the entrance of the peninsula are vestiges of a deep fosse which at both ends admited [sic] the waters of the lake and converted the site of the Castle into an Island and over which a drawbridge was thrown. Within the outer fosse at brief intervals are a second third and fourth. The last stretched from side to side of the peninsula immediately at the entrance of the castle, in front of which was a wall to protect the besieged, it had also a drawbridge in the centre which is supposed to have been the last place which an enemy required to force. Two arches at the N. E. and S.W. [North East and South West] angles, through which the water of this fosse was received [continued on page 108]

[South East by South] of Lochmaben Town Hall. The Castle Loch is a large and beautiful sheet of water, lying south of the Town of Lochmaben, in length about a mile and a half, and in mean breadth a mile, abounding in a variety of fish. It is affirmed by the fishermen that there are 15 or 16 different kinds fit for the table.among which there is one that, from every information that can be obtained, is peculiar to that loch, as it is to be found no where else in Britain. It is called the vendise or vendace some say from Vendoes in France, as being brought from thence by one of the Jameses, which is not very probable, as it is found by experience to die the moment it is touched, and has been attempted to be transported to other lochs in the neighbourhood, where it has always died. It is generally about the size of a small herring. which it resembles much in external appearance and in its anatomy, it has the taste and flavour of a fresh herring, not quite so strong, but more delicate, and is reckoned the most delicious fish that swims. They lie in the deepest part of the loch, and are caught with a net. The pike, which is the tyrant of the lake, destroys many of them. Lochmaben Castle stands upon a peninsula at its Southern extremity.

[Northern] boundary of a small projection at the East side of this parish. A small river which rises in the north end of the parish of Hutton, through part of which it runs; and enters Dryfesdale, after passing a part of Applegarth. It runs a course from north to south for about 2½ miles emptying itself into the Annan, in a direct line between the market town of Lockerbie and the Royal Burgh of Lochmaben, and in moderate weather its water is pure and clear. The bed is of a deep gravel, and therefore in dry seasons it disappears at some parts for about a mile. But, in rainy weather, it comes down in sudden and rapid swells, breaking down and overflowing all its banks, so that nothing in the way can resist the impetuousity of the torrent. Sheep. pigs, even cattle, and trees torn from their roots, have been seen floating on its surface.
