The Castle Loch is a large and beautiful sheet of water, lyying south of the town of Lochmaben in length about a mile and a half, and in breadth a mile, abounding in a variety of fish, It contains a species of fish called Vendace, which it is said is not to be found in any other Loch in Scotland. |

042; 050 | [Situation] Near the centre of Lochmaben Parish 8 miles from Dumfries 4 miles from Lockerbie and 15 from Moffat. Lochmaben is a burgh of very ancient date though at this distance of time the time of its erection Cannot be Correctly ascertained. The tradition is, that it was made a royal burgh after the accession of Bruce to the throne. This burgh is governed by a Provost, three bailies, a dean of guild, a treasurer, and nine ordinary councillors. The town contains about 1000 inhabitants. There are no manufactories or trade of any kind carried on, so as to induce Strangers to live in the burgh. A great proportion of the inhabitants farm small crofts from the produce of which they bring up and educate their families, the men are generally seeking their fortune in other lands. |
