W. Robson W. Sharp W. Swan Johnstone Co [County] Map William Fay |
041 | In the North of this Plan 30 chs. [chains] N.E. of Aucheurath [Trig Station][illegible]. A house, outhouses 46 with farm attached, occupied by James Swan, property of Mrs. Robson. The derivation of Guillyburn given by local authorities is from guil, a yellow weed peculiar to the district. This no doubt is meant for the Gule or Corn Marigold not local but common, and which, not being a water plant, makes it somewhat difficult in this instance, to guess at its association with a Burn. Gullyburn may be recommended as better orthography from the Dumfries word Gull, a large trout, and which is borne out by this locality being at one time famed for freshwater fish. |
