[situation] Nearly in the centre of the County of Dumfries. The Name of this Parish is written in Ancient records Johnston and Johnstone, that is the dwelling- place of John- seemingly indicating by this signification that some illustrious person of the Name had his residence in this Parish during the Scoto-Irish period. The Name is now invariably spelt Johnstone which is similar to that of the Annandale family nearly sole Proprietors and - Patrons of the Parish.
The Parish of Johnstone is bounded on the North by that of Kirkpatrick- Juxta, on the East by Applegarth and Wamphray, on the South by Lochmaben and on the West by Kirkmichael. There is no detached part of Johnstone within the limits of another Parish, nor is there within its boundaries a detached portion of any other Parish. Its shape is triangular - measures 6 miles in length and 3 miles in average breadth.- It's Area is now computed at about 13,610 acres, of which 1,500 are under wood, 800 moss, 1600 mountain pasture and 10,800 Arable land, but the soil is poor and not so productive as in the majority of Parishes of this County. Along the East side of Parish it is flat, the soil of which consists of a dry loam or gravel, in the interior there are a number of Mosses, under the surface of which, large trees of birch and oak are found [&] which indicate their growth from the original soil previous to the moss formation,- towards the N. and N.W. it is hilly, Mollin Moor, Deer Edge and Minnygap Height in these districts attaining an altitude of from 1300 to 1400 feet above sea level. This Parish is exceedingly well watered by several large streams and numerous rills, the principal of which are the River Annan - forming for the most part the Eastern Parish Boundary, Kinnel Water partially forming the Western Boundary and Duff Kinnel Water on the Northern Boundary. Three Turnpike Roads in excellent repair |

2 Parish of Johnstone County of Dumfries
repair traverse this Parish from N. To S. one respectively from Dumfries and Annan to Moffat and the other a side-branch of the great Edinburgh and Carlisle Trust Road. There is no Manufactory and no minerals have been discovered, though from the circumstance of pieces of pure lead having been found in the district Mr. Johnstone of Raehills was induced some years ago to attempt some expensive undertakings in search of that ore. The villages are Johnstonebridge, St. Anne and Upper Elizatown, the inhabitants of which are chiefly employed in rearing swine. There is one Parish School and a Parish Church. The only mansion-house in the Parish is Raehills, the Seat of J. J. Hope Johnstone presently member for this County, which was built by his Grandfather, James, Earl of Hopetoun in the year 1786,_ It is the old English baronial style of masonry,_ A large addition fronting the South which contains the principal apartments was erected by the present owner._ With the exception of Drumlanrig Castle, it is the most magnificent edifice in this County or even in the South of Scotland. Population of Parish at the last census 1073.
The principal Antiquity is Lochwood Castle or Tower at the North end of the Parish, said to have been built during the 14th. Century and which from the thickness of its walls and from its insulated situation - being surrounded by inpassable bogs and marshes,- must have been a place of great strength. See Page 45, It was burnt during the 16th Century (1593) by Robert natural brother to Lord Maxwell - was again repaired and occupied up to 1724._ A small portion of the east side which is nearly level with the adjoining ground is all that now remains._ Small earthen works which are generally accredited in locality as British Forts occur throughout this Parish and which in the absence of any authority thereon have been characterised as such on Plans._ There is a mound at the Southern extremity of the Parish believed to have been a Moat._ A small mound of earth near the centre of the Parish is supposed to be an ancient Tumulus, of which it is also traditionally reported to be the spot where the Laird of Dumgree's body was hid by one of the Johnston family._ Drumgee was shot by Johnstone in a private quarrel._ The Site of an ancient Chapel is shewn a little S. of a farm-house bearing the name of Chapel, of which however there is no information extant. The present Parish comprehends the old Parish of Johnston, a large part of the Parish of Dumgree and a small part of the Ancient Parish of Garvald.

This is the remains of an Ancient Stronghold, a baronial residence of the feudal lairds of the family of Johnstones of Annandale. Nothing now remains, except a small portion of its Eastern side, which nearly levelled with the adjoining ground; and a small cellar covered with a mass of fragments and rubbish. History and tradition state it to have been built in the 14th Century, and to have been a place of great strength having prodigious thick walls, and being surrounded with almost impossible bogs and marshes, some of which are now reclaimed. This circumstance induced King James VI, to say, that the man, who built Lochwood though outwardly honest must have been a knave at heart.
His Majesty's remark in this case, may be correct, as History states that the Johnstones of Annandale committed sundry depradations or robberies, particularly on Drumlanrig, Closeburn, Lagg and Sanquhar, all of which, have been stronghold residences of feudal lairds contemporary and of the same consequence as the Castle of Lochwood.
In 1585 the Laird Johnstone, chief of the powerful sept of that name, was ordered by Government to apprehend, John Sixth Lord Maxwell Warden of the West Marches and Earl of Morton. the laird of Johnstone was himself shortly afterwards defeated and taken prisoner, and his house of Lochwood set on fire that lady Johnstone might have light to put on her hoodi..
Sir James Johnston of Lochwood Castle, son of the Chief already mentioned was Knighted at the Coronation of the consort of James VI in 1590 And at the head of 40 mounted troopers fought in 1593 against Maxwells of Nithsdale, on the plain of Dryfe Sands in the Parish of Dryfesdale, where upwards of 700 of them were killed, among the slain, was Lord Maxwell a nobleman of great spirit and piety.

The entries showed editing and words crossed out. A large 'a' at the start of a sentence was routinely crossed out and 'A' substituted. Mis-spelling of chiefly as cheifly in crossed-out Description Remarks.
Cleughheadshaw Wood and Cleughheads Shaw-wood were crossed out as modes of spelling CLEUCH-HEADS SHAW.
Designation of Wood Footer for David Johnstone might seem unlikely, but literally it would be a person who goes on foot in the woods and maybe in use at the time!
Interesting that although the Modes of Spelling were unanimously Cleughheads, the names written in List of Names were always CLEUCH-HEADS!
Each of the names in List of Names has been ticked.
Some letters from the names under List of Names on the far left of the image have been missed in the scan but are easily deduced. |

"There is upon the east side of the small runner which separates the farm of Crawknowes from Beastockrig, a small burrow or tumulus, which was never opened in the memory of any person now alive, and which is said to be the spot where the Laird of Lochwood shot, in a private quarrel the Laird of Dumgree, and hid his body" The above is an extract taken from the statistical report the evidence of which is corroberated by the authorities given hereon. The spot answering to the above description was pointed out to me by Mr. J. Harkness farmer Williamston- Thos Watson 2nd Corp: R.E. |

Tumulus Situation On the West side of Martinwhat Rig.
This feature is also supposed to have been in existence previous to the occurrence mentioned in description. It is unreasonable to suppose that Lochwood would have formed a Tumulus -- his object as is stated being secrecy. It may, in the absence of definite authority be conjectured that Lochwood chose this mound, from the dread entertained by the people of disturbing these ancient relics.

033 |
This is rather a remarkable piece of Antiquity, it consists of a circular cave in a solid sandstone rock, at one end it is about three or four feet in diameter, and at the other a man would have difficulty in crawling through. Its length from end to end is about thirty feet.
It is situated on the left bank of the Kinnel a short distance above Elizatown and where the stream is crossed by a wooden Bridge. Some suppose that it was scooped out by the current of the stream, which is highly improbable as it is many feet higher than the water ever rises.
It must have been cut by the hands of man, and would most likely be a resort, during the time of the persecution in Scotland as it is well known that the Covenanters often fled to the Kinnel Linns, for safety when pursued by their enemies, Nothing is known of the person Lunny after whom the place is supposed to have been named further than (as the story goes) he was shat with a "siller saxpence"
(In different hand)
Its a sandstone rock to which this name applies, there is a small hole in it caused by Metamorphic the same cause applies to other rocks (Geologically Considered)
