At the S.En [South Eastern] extremity of the County of Dumfries.
The Name is derived from the circumstance of the existing Parish comprehending only one half of the original one of Morton, - the other half havingbeen annexed to Canonbie at the commencement of the 17th Century.
The Parish of Half Morton is bounded on the North by those of Middlebie and Langholm, on the East by Cannonbie and Cumberlandshire, on the South by Gretna and Kirkpatrick-Fleming and on the West by Kirkpatrick-Fleming and Middlebie. There is no detached part of Half Morton within the boundaries of another Parish nor is there within the limits above assigned to it a detached portion of any other Parish but it is joined quoad Sacra to Langholm and consequently termed a quoad civilia Parish. Its greatest length is 5 miles and its greatest breadth 3 1/2 miles. It is an oblong stretching from North to South but having an indentation at its Southern extremity. Its entire area has now been computed at about 6300 acres. The district as a whole may be considered arable, the only exceptions being at the northern and South-western districts where small portions of the land are respectively hilly and boggy. The cultivated land is amongst the most fertile of this County, being peculiarly well drained and protected by thriving plantations. All the |

All the hills are of very moderate height. The principal Streams are the River Sark which forms for the most part the En. [Eastern] boundary, Black Sark Water which partly traces the Wn. [Western] and SWn. [South Western] boundaries and Cadgill Burn from the northern district SE [South East] to River Sark - the interior being well watered by Springs and rills. Two Turnpike roads from the Sn [Southern] extremity running North diverge respectively South and North and East and West and another line runs from West to East across the Nn [Northern] district. There are no manufactories carried on nor minerals wrought. There is nothing in the district deserving the name of village or town. There is a Quoad Sacra Church centrally Situated also a Parish School. The principal proprietor is Sir John Herron Maxwell of Springkell. Population about 700.
The site of an ancient Chapel has been shewn. |
