064 | [Situation] To the South of this Parish. A navigable arm of the Seawhich extends Eastward from the Irish Sea forming the boundary between England and Scotland for upwards of 50 miles. The shore is flat and sandy with a few sunk rocks, but almost every part affords safe landing places for small vessels of 100 tons burden within six miles of its extremity. Frith is sometimes written Firth. Frith is the most approved being from the Latin Fretum. Firth, etymology unknown, and is therefore incorrect. Firth is derived from Norwegian Fiord - a Sea, is here preferred it being the term generally applied in this district and also throughout Scotland. |
