014 | [Situation] From N.Wn [North Western] Parish boundary extending S.S.E. [South South East] through Parish. The remains of an ancient wall said to have been constructed immediately subsequent to the Roman abdication. It is composed of earth and stones, varies in breadth from 8 to 14 feet at its base, and in some places is from 3 to 5 feet high - a deep fosse being still visible at intervals along its track. Dr. [Doctor] Simpson the first authority who has directed attention to this antiquity in the locality is of opinion that it is the same wall called by some authors Deil's Dike, consequently has approved of the orthography adopted on Plans. From South Mains (in Sanquhar) "it then points towards the woods of Eliock, from which it advances through Durisdeer and the Parishes beyond" History of Sanquhar. |
