Mrs. Crichton Mr. Williamson |
041 | [Situation] About 3 Chains N. [North of Friar's Carse. Here formerly Stood a monastery, the Site was well Chosen, being Situate on An eminence overlooking a long reach of the River Nith, and Surrounded by a fertile plain - There is no particular description of this Edifice extant. It appears from Ancient documents however to have been dependent as a Monastery on Melrose Abbey. In 1465. Cardinal Antonius confirmed a Charter by the Monastery of Melrose of the adjoining property of Ellisland to John Kirkpatrick, but whether Friars Carse was included in the Con-veyance does not Appear. The Only vestiges now remaining Are Some Sculptured Stones such as Adorned Catholic Chapels. In Connection herewith See Friars Carse & Carse Loch Pages 72,67. |
