055 A large building built of red Sandstone erected 1848-9 at a cost of £10,000. It is a Lunatic Asylum in connection with the Crichton Royal Institution the building is 2 & 3 Storeys high. It is exclusively for the accommodation of paupers or patients who pay the same rates of Board as paupers viz £15 per annum exclusive of clothing. It is capable of accommodating at present about 160 patients but when the whole design will be completed which will consist of another wing with the extension of the centre range it will be capable of accommodating about 400 patients. It will consist of patients from the three Southern Counties (as the name imports) i.e. from Wigtownshire Kirkcudbrightshire & Dumfrieshire. It was resolved at a meeting of influential members from the above counties that these districts should cooperate in carrying the objects of this institution & if necessary to give towards the expenditure It was hence named the Southern Counties Asylum. -
