055 | A plain handsome house with portico in front built about 20 years since having Suitable out offices attached with ornamental ground tastefully planted with shrubbery & large trees & a small well cultivated garden These grounds are handsomely varied by banks & terraces which is partly natural & partly artificial, part of the Grounds being the site of an old quarry the refuse heaps &c contributed to the irregularity of the ground which the proprietor formed into terraces &c. The Horticultural Society of Dumfries hold their annual Show of flowers general for some time past within these ornamental grounds. within the grounds is green house, vinery, &c. also a neat cottage occupied by the gardener. The name Castledykes was originally applied to the fortification that defended Cummins Castle which stood here on Castle Hill. It is the property & residence of John Buchan Hepburn Esqr. |
