Inscription on a Marble tablet in the [Cottages]
055 A Square consisting of 10 Small but neat modern built Cottages erected in 1844, out of a mortified fund left by Mrs. Carruthers, of Warmanbie, for the support and accommodation of "ten or fewer" Lame or blind women, natives of Dumfries. The fund was left under trustees, consisting of some of the Magistrates of the town and the two Parish Ministers of Dumfries. The largest one of the cottages is occupied by the Governess of the inmates of the other cottages. In one of the governessed rooms, is a neat little marble tablet, with the following inscription
"Mrs Carruthers of Warmanbie
"Died
"A Dumfries the 30th September 1839
"Aged 77
"She mortified the residue of her fortune for the
"Support of ten or fewer Lame or blind women
Natives of Dumfries
"And her trustees erected in 1844 these
"The Carruthers Cottages" as a Monument
"To her Memory, and for the residence of the
"Objects of her Benevolence"
