DUMFRIES | 49;50;55 | [Continued] to have been the Scene of Druidical rites for the testing of Virginity. - There are however neither facts nor remains extant to justify the Conclusion of its Association with the Druids. The Cavity Seems to have been formed by a fall of a fragment of the rocK, leaving a Canopy of Stone stretching overhead, while a portion of the broken mass rests upon the brink of the ledge that forms the floor. - Several Springs in the vicinity of Lochar Moss are impregnated with Steel but being little cared for they have little or no repute. The villages are Gasstoun, Lochbriggs, Georgetown And Kelton all of minor importance and with the exception of the first which is tolerable, are more AKin to Squalid hamlets. The Parish is intersected in all directions by well macadamised roads, and has benefited greatly by the introduction of the railway called the Glasgow And South-Western opened in 1849.-50-51, - a portion of which traverses Lochar Moss by An embanKment Constructed by the SinKing of huge piles of wood, as the means of Consolidation,= it enters this Parish to the N.W. [North West] of the Burgh by a Bridge Across the Nith Constructed At An expense of upwards of £8,000 greatly impeded however in its progressive building by the flooding of the River. - The Station to the N.E. [North East] of the Burgh has but inferior accommodation both for passengers and goods, but the inhabitants are now strenuously endeavouring to impress upon the Company the necessity of its enlargement to meet the demands of a rapidly increasing traffic &c. A Company embryo suggest a line to Lockerbie in Connection with the Caledonian Railway for which Proprietors and Traders are now readily Subscribing and which Scheme would detract most Seriously the traffic of the Glasgow & S.W. [South West] Rail: [Railway] The Subscribed Capital [Per] Act is now up for the introduction of a line from Dumfries to Kirkcudbright &c. The Navigation of the Nith has been much improved And vessels from 50 to 60 tons Can now with facility reach the Burgh. - The traffic being mainly Coal and other mineral produce, the profits, - Since the introduction of the Railway, - barely remunerate importers. - The Ports more immediately Connected with the Parish are on the decline; the district being entirely agricultural, it is as a Mart that Dumfries most prominently figures. - Four fairs are Annually held within the Burgh at which business has been transacted to upwards of £30000 in one day. There is also a weeKly Market on Wednesdays, resembling rather a fair than a hebdomadal occurrence, At which in the Sale of Pork alone, transactions to the amount of £5000 are not uncommonly effected. Messrs Scott conduct to a considerable extent the manufactures of Cloth and Stockings in which 300 persons procure employ. Tanneries also exist to Some extent but are now Somewhat on the decline. The Building of Coasting vessels is carried on to a limited extent at Kelton. - The Public Institutions with the exception of the Chrichton Royal Institution and S.C. [Southern Counties] Asylum are within the Burgh [Continued] |
