051 | [Situation] 12 miles East from Dumfries Burgh. A considerable market and Post town pleasantly situated on the east side of the River Annan. It consists of one regular street about 48 chains in length, running from North to South, and another about a quarter of a mile long going off at right angles towards the East. The parish Church of Dryesdale [Dryfesdale], seated on an eminence at the head of the principal Street has a fine effect encompased [encompassed] with a burial ground It has ten well attended fairs Robert Johnstone Douglas of Lockerby house is the proprietor."In all Feus, Leases, Tacks and Assignations advertisements, or Roups and by the Inhabitants, this is written Lockerbie" This Town is supposed to have derived its Name from the Celtic Lock and Bie signifying place of strength, - Accordingly the remains of An Ancient Tower now called the Mains are still pointed out in the Town. Markets chiefly for the Sale of Pork, And in Some instances for Cattle and Horses are held on the 2nd Thursday of January, Feby [February] March, April and May. There is likewise a weekly market for the Sale of Pork. Ten other markets or Fairs are held during the Summer and Autumn months. It is the Seat of a vast lamb fair usually held on the 2nd August O.S. [Old Style] at which there are generally from 50 to 60,000 lambs shewn. It is also a retail depot for all sorts of goods for all central and most of Northern Annandale. in it are several large and elegantly fitted up shops - also two first class Hotels or Inns one of which is a posting house, various literary and religious institutions three places of worship and two Branch Banks. The Caledonian Railway passes through the Town and towards the N.E. [North East] extremity there is an elegant and Commodious Station. Since the introduction of the Railway the Town has been supplied with Gas. The population maybe about 1,00. See Page 2 |
