061 [Situation] On Wardlaw Hill
The Remains of a Roman Camp on Wardlaw which is noticed by various authorities. The visible entrenchments measure from 16 to 20 Chains at their base and tho' [though] now much deffaced by cultivation attain a gradual rise of about 3 feet above the natural surface of the surrounding land. This Camp is about 10 Chains long and 8 broad, consequently, of those dimensions ascribed to the accommodation of a single legion without allies - a fact which it may not be amiss to observe confirms in some measure the supposition of antiquarians that it was the first Roman Camp constructed by Julius Agricola on entering upon his Campaigns in Scotland. Chalmers Caledonia remarks, " It is here we see for the first time a Roman Camp opposed to a British Fort." Some antiquarians suppose this the site of the Uxella of Ptolemy of which however in consequence of the many other locales assigned thereto, it would be assuming too much to characterise this Camp etc. as such on Plan.
