134.05 | A large village situated at the south base of the Ochil Hills. It is comparatively modern: the greater part of it having sprung up within the last thirty years. It is celebrated for its woollen manufacture, at which about three thousand of its inhabitants are employed. There are some very good streets, viz., Stirling Street, Ochil Street, Hamilton Street and Mill Street. The turnpike road from Stirling to Kinross intersects it from west to east, forming High Street, in which are the principal shops. The houses are partly one, and partly two storeys, slated, and in good repair. It has four places of worship, viz., the Parish Church, U.P. [United Presbyterian] Church, Free Church and an Evangelical Union Chapel. four schools: three adventure and the Parish School, an Academy, and Popular Institute; two hotels; one inn and three small public houses. Besides the numerous mills worked by steam-power, there are a number of buildings in the town occupied by handloom weaving. |
